Pioneer Prince put up an improved work this morning at Santa Anita, covering six furlongs in 1:15 flat. Breaking off at the 5/8 pole under exercise rider Austin Solis, he was under a good hold throughout the drill and responded when asked by his rider in the stretch. He galloped out nicely past the wire to finish out at the 1/8 pole.
Trainer Richard Mandella was pleased to see him back to his usual self and reported he was doing much better since have a new pair of shoes applied.
Following our discussion with Richard, we will see how he exits today’s breeze and consider both a MSW going a flat mile on the dirt on January 19th and a $50,000 maiden claiming going one flat mile on the turf on January 20th at Santa Anita.
With three races under his belt and his best showing on his form being a fourth-place finish via disqualification, it could be a key time to be aggressive and open up additional conditions. We’ll continue to discuss with Richard and firm up our plans soon.
