Disdainful [PAST]

We are very heartbroken to report that Disdainful(IRE) contracted Peritonitis which is an infection of the abdominal cavity, an affliction that is often fatal. In spite of the best efforts of the equine hospital staff to save him, he didn't respond to treatment as hoped and was humanely euthanized on January 6, 2023. 

Disdainful was an extremely promising talent with an excellent attitude, and we believe he was destined for greatness, but it wasn't meant to be. His loss was unrelated to training or racing.

Rest in Peace, Disdainful.

Disdainful's Story

We got involved with the partnership on Disdainful(IRE) after he'd already won his debut race as a two-year-old in the UK. 

A couple of weeks after the partnership paperwork was completed, he ran in his first race in Yarmouth, Ireland. In spite of a high weight (10-15 pounds heavier than the other horses) and a soft turf track, he ran a good race mid-pack, went to the lead approaching the finish, and was passed in the final strides by another horse, just getting nipped for 2nd at the wire to finish 3rd. We were very impressed with what we saw.

Soon after, Disdainful boarded a flight to the USA, was located at Fair Hill Training Center, where he was trained by Graham Motion. He ran again at Keeneland the weekend before the Breeders Cup races were held, and in spite of a troubled trip and a very classy field of 2YOs, he separated himself from the pack approaching the wire and went after General Jim (now a stakes performer and winner of the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby 2023 undercard) who was leading by several lengths. This gallant second place finish spoke to his quality and talent, and Disdainful was soon on a transport to Del Mar in California to run in his first graded stakes, the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille at Del Mar. Sadly, he cast in his stall a few days before the race and never made it into the gate. A few weeks later, he was diagnosed with Peritonitis and could not be saved in spite of every effort.
