Great Article on Zinger's Former Trainer Justin Evans and Son

Once upon a time, we claimed back a homebred who was losing all his races and coming in dead last in some. People said he was "hopeless."

He went to trainer Justin Evans, who worked with him for about six weeks. When he was finally ready to be entered in a race, we drove to Farmington, NM to see him run, not really expecting a lot.

Well...

He won that race.

And the next. And the next.

In fact, he won four of his first five races with Justin as his trainer, then came back again with another big win at Sunland Park (we've posted the video of that one on this site).

Since that time, Justin has been the leading trainer at just about every track where he's trained. He's currently at Emerald Downs near Seattle, and this article was in the local newspaper about Justin and his son, Austin, who's following in his dad's footsteps.

I think they're going to find that Derby horse one day. :)

Zinger's Big Win - Remembering When

It's been almost three years since our homebred son of Diabolical, Blazing Away ("Zinger"), made his last start at Sunland Park, but what a run it was! (See the video below.)

We'd had to sell him as a yearling and then spent the next several years "stalking" him, until the time was right to get him back. Though he had a great start to his career, qualifying for a $175,000 stakes in his second start, he changed hands a few times and his performance started to falter. By the time we got him back, he'd been deemed "hopeless" and was losing all his races and even coming in dead last in some. Once he got with our wonderful trainer, Justin Evans, what a fairy tale year we had with him.

He won four of his first five starts, and then came back with this one to cap off his career wins!

He's happily retired at home on the ranch now, and occupies the stall of his late dam, Blazing Bartok.

"Cut loose like a Quarter Horse from the gate, Blazing Away goes to the front."

"As they are turning for home, it's Blazing Away doing just that!"

"A quarter mile to go -- Blazing Away and Francisco Arieta strictly the ones to beat here."

"In total command at the top of the stretch, they lead by three."

"Blazing Away by five long lengths. They'll never get him. He's gone!"

"Blazing Away - the most impressive wire-to-wire winner of the day."
