Catalyst Runs 4th in Second Start

Catalyst ran 4th today after getting off to a great start and running just off the leaders, but had a bit of a rough trip and was checked hard before the 2nd turn when the 4 horse apparently closed off her path, which caused her to lose momentum and back up to 7th place. She started making up ground again out of the turn but didn't have enough of a closing kick to overtake the top three horses in the stretch. A rough trip but a good learning experience.

Hopefully the weather in Arkansas will be greatly improved in the coming days so she'll be able to return to a solid work schedule that should improve her fitness for her next start.

We'll update this post with race analysis and/or video when they are received.

RACE RECAP

Catalyst checked in fourth in today’s opener at Oaklawn Park, beaten by 5 3/4 lengths. Breaking much better from the gate, Catalyst took a good early position behind the leader #4 Amy Z entering the first turn. Down the backstretch, the daughter of Gun Runner traveled nicely and seemed to be in major contention.

Turning for home, jockey Joel Rosario asked her to go through the rail but was shut off and forced to check fairly significantly, losing momentum and inevitably a few lengths on the leaders. Catalyst was able to re-rally down the lane after losing her momentum and picked up some pieces down the stretch.

Talking to Joel and trainer Steve Asmussen following the race, that was a much improved effort for our 3-year-old who was traveling well before being cut off. It was good to see her fight back on after dealing with that adversity which definitely cost her a placing. With two races under her belt and plenty of experience gained, this effort keeps the hope alive. We will see how she exits today’s effort and let her return to her training routine before building up our plan and we will report back with any news to share.

Catalyst is #2

POST RACE UPDATE

Catalyst exited Friday’s maiden special weight in good physical order. She earned a 64 Beyer Speed Figure for her fourth-place effort. We still think there’s plenty more improvement in store for her and as we mentioned, her trip definitely cost her a placing. Nonetheless, it was a positive step in the right direction.
