Catalyst - 2nd Start Overview

In the opening race at Oaklawn Park tomorrow, Catalyst is set to compete in a maiden special weight over 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. With a post time of 12:30 p.m. CT, Catalyst is listed as the third choice with odds of 7-2.

In her debut race, Catalyst got nervous in the gate, resulting in a very slow break. Jockey Cristian Torres had to quickly adapt, easing her to the rail to save ground. Despite experiencing kickback and initially struggling to find a rhythm, Catalyst gradually moved up positions along the rail. The lack of racing experience was likely a major factor in the end result, and trainer Steve Asmussen noted that the filly will likely step forward with the race under her belt, especially given the challenge of debuting as a 2-year-old around two turns.

Due to weather conditions at Oaklawn Park, Catalyst’s work tab has been interrupted, but she managed to clock two official works at Oaklawn and additional training at the Ten Mile Creek Training Center. With the added experience and hopefully a smoother break from the gate, Catalyst aims to showcase her full potential this time. Asmussen has relayed his confidence that we will see a different performance tomorrow.

Taking a look at the competition, the morning-line favorite, #4 Amy Z, is expected to set the pace. Amy Z has shown speed going two turns and finished second in her most recent outing. Catalyst has previously faced Amy Z, finishing ahead by a significant margin.

Another contender to watch is #6 Happy Talk, trained by D. Wayne Lukas. While winless in three starts, Happy Talk recently finished third in the same race where Amy Z took second. Lukas’s expertise in developing horses suggests that Happy Talk could show improvement in this race.

Among the first-time starters, #1 Midsummer March, trained by Kenny McPeek, stands out with Julien Leparoux in the irons. Despite the challenging inside post position, Midsummer March was a notable $475,000 purchase. Previously working in company with MyRacehorse stablemate Fancy Quality, we know this one has some ability and has the advantage of having a more consistent training routine being based at Fair Grounds versus Oaklawn.

Overall, the race appears to be an open one, and we are optimistic about Catalyst’s chances based off the feedback we have received from Steve. Admittedly, she still has obstacles to overcome due to the time between races and missed training, but she seems ready to go out there and give it another go.
