Nakoma Update

After a short rest so she could recover from some aches and pains associated with beginning more advanced exercises, Nakoma has handled her return to jogging without issue and is reportedly happy to be back to work. :D 

With the barn preparing to ship out of Saratoga, Jena Antonucci will weigh the options of sending Nakoma to either Keeneland or Belmont, but Keeneland is very likely to be her next spot.

Vekoma continues to be super hot as a freshman sire. On Saturday, he was represented by G3 Iroquois Stales romper Jonathan’s Way, who earned 10 of the first 2025 Kentucky Derby qualifying points! Vekoma also narrowly missed siring his first Grade 1 winner in Woodbine’s Natalma Stakes! He also had a five-length debut winner at BAQ. Victories and strong performances from many of his first crop have been a very good sign of things to come.

We look forward to Nakoma's continued advancement and will post further updates as she progresses. 

Seize The Grey Entered in G1 Pennsylvania Derby

We are excited to announce Seize the Grey was officially entered for this Saturday's G1 $1M Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing on September 21st. 

Our colt drew post 2 of (11) and has regular rider and Preakness winning jockey Jaime Torres back in the irons. 

The 13th race has a post time of 6:10 PM ET / 4:10 PM MT.

Other entries include Dragoon Guard, another talented son of Arrogate who has won his last four races, including G3 level stakes. Past competitors and Triple Crown contenders include Stronghold, Resilience, and Uncle Heavy. 

Seize The Grey has continued to train beautifully. Help us cheer him on in Saturday's race.  

Blue Devil Completes 4th Work Back

Although he appears to be off to a slow start, he's in the hands of one of the best -- Steve Asmussen -- and his works indicate that the Asmussen team may be working on rebuilding his stamina, wind and overall fitness before advancing to faster works. 

So far, so good. 

Seismic Beauty Works - Appears it's a Pass on the Dogwood Stakes

Seismic Beauty worked a strong half mile in :48 flat this morning at Santa Anita Park. Trainer Bob Baffert was extremely pleased with today’s breeze. We’re still ironing out our next race target but will report back as soon as a plan is finalized.

Although the Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs was a potential target, it does not appear that Seismic Beauty has been entered. Not surprising since she's still on the West Coast, and the trip logistics probably didn't make sense at this time. With Santa Anita opening soon, our guess is she'll likely target a West Coast stakes if all goes well. 

Here's The Kicker Work and Update

Here’s the Kicker had her first work back this morning, covering four furlongs in :49.80. We caught up with trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. at the yearling sale this week who reported your daughter of Liam’s Map continues in great order.

She will be entered today for a maiden special weight going six and one half furlongs which is an extra on the overnight. We will follow up once the overnight is released.

English Jubilee Runs 3rd at Woodbine

English Jubilee overcame a hard check early on in her race at Woodbine today that put her into last place, but she rallied for 3rd in the stretch. (We thought she might have grabbed second but she got caught by another closer before the wire.) All-in-all, a pretty nice effort, and best of all, it does not appear she was claimed, so she'll be back to race for us another day. Good Job, English.

English Jubilee finished 3rd beaten by 5 1/4 lengths, on September 14, 2024, at WOODBINE in Race 1.

FOLLOW UP:

We received an update that cast a lot more light on English Jubilee's failure to mount a strong rally. Since the channel was so focused on the paddock activity, post parade, warm up and gate load of a MSW at Churchill Downs instead of the live feed at Woodbine, they didn't broadcast her race until nearly 20 minutes after it had run, and didn't cover any of the pre-race hijinx we were just filled in on.

"English Jubilee threw a wing-ding before the race, as she can do on occasion, and she blasted Patrick Husbands in the face, causing Patrick to require concussion protocol after the race and it probably rung the filly’s bell, too. 

They were both dull around the oval and made just a mild bid to be a non threatening 3rd behind the filly we knew would be tough..."

So, as they say, there's the "rest of the story." 

It would have been helpful if we could have actually viewed the issues with the gate load at Woodbine, instead of the channel droning on and on for nearly 25 minutes about some random maiden special weight at Churchill while a LIVE RACE was going off at Woodbine, but that's the issue we face with television coverage on certain channels these days. 

Caldera Arrives at Lukas's Churchill Barn!

Caldera arrived safely at Churchill Downs to join the D. Wayne Lukas barn this week and has settled in nicely. The son of Liam’s Map will have a few easy days. We'll follow up once he returns to the track. 

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM MRH

We are thrilled to announce Caldera, our big son of Liam's Map, has officially joined "Coach" D. Wayne Lukas's string at Churchill Downs! 

Caldera has been working beautifully at Dave Scanlon's Oak Ridge Farrm. So far, he has been a star student in his training. Nearly every work he's had, Scanlon's noted it was either "a walk in the park" or "he makes it look easy" with his natural athleticism and good mind. 

These are great qualities you want to see in a young horse heading into the next stage of their training.

Although Seize the Grey is currently at Saratoga and not in the same barn as Caldera, we can't help to get a little bit of déjà vu with Caldera since last year around this time, Seize the Grey was at Churchill himself. Caldera has huge hoofprints to follow, but there's nothing more exciting than a grey starting their career with D. Wayne Lukas (Seize the Grey, Oxbow, Winning Colors, and Lady's Secret would all agree). 

It's now up to Coach and Caldera!

Secret Crush Update

The team checked in with the Silver Springs staff earlier this week regarding Secret Crush. Farm manager Kevin Notlemeyer reported he is a happy horse on turnout and has been very sound since moving out to a large paddock. Dr. Sutter plans to perform a re-check this coming week which will be his 30-day check since being turned out.

English Jubilee Entry

English Jubilee has been entered in Race #1, a $40,000 Maiden Claiming with a purse of $65,700, on Saturday at Woodbine. 

English Jubilee has drawn post #3 with Patrick Husbands on board. Mark Casse is her trainer. Post time is 1:10 PM ET / 11:10 AM MT.

Seize The Grey Update

The MRH team has been in touch with trainer D. Wayne Lukas over the last few days while they've been at the Keeneland September yearling sale together. The Coach reports our son of Arrogate remains in great order and will have one final breeze this coming weekend in preparation for the G1 Pennsylvania Derby. Mr. Lukas continues to be full of confidence. 

We will report back once our colt returns to the work tab. 

Seismic Beauty Work and Possible Stakes Entry

Seismic Beauty had her first work back since her maiden victory yesterday morning at Del Mar, covering three furlongs in :36.20. In her solo drill, the daughter of Uncle Mo wasn’t asked for much and went easily throughout. 

With the Del Mar meet now closed, trainer Bob Baffert wasn’t looking for anything special and has been pleased with the filly since her race. Seismic Beauty has been nominated to the G3 Dogwood on September 21st at Churchill Downs, however that would require a ship across country and there will also be plenty of options as soon as the Santa Anita meet starts back at the end of the month. 

The Baffert barn is expected to ship back to Santa Anita in the coming days and we'll discuss plans with Bob once she returns. 

Blue Devil work

Blue Devil breezed a half mile in :50.20 yesterday morning at Ellis Park. He traveled nicely by himself while not being asked for much. 

He’s moving right along, now having two half-miles under him and is making good progress. His works will begin to get more serious over the coming weeks.

Fancy Quality Workout Report

Fancy Quality breezed five furlongs in 1:04.21 this morning over the Belmont training track. This week she breezed in company with a stablemate from Argentina, Dia Estelar. 

We remain on target for her debut on September 21st at Belmont at the Big A and your daughter of Wootton Bassett will have one additional breeze next Saturday in preparation.

Simply Enchanting Update

Simply Enchanting has continued in good order since her comeback race on Sunday. She earned a 72 Beyer Speed Figure for her effort. It was great to see her respond well following that head-scratching effort at Churchill but she showed plenty of grit in the stretch and this looks to be a race we can build off of.

The logical next spot would be the same condition on October 4th at Santa Anita but we’ll see how she continues to train out of this race and finalize our decision as we get closer.  

The D’Amato barn is scheduled to return to Santa Anita early next week, so her first work back will come there. 

Fireball Birdie Runs 2ND at Remington Park

Fireball Birdie ran 2nd at Remington Park yesterday evening, two lengths behind the winner. He earned a 91 Equibase speed figure for the race.

Simply Enchanting Just Misses at Del Mar

Simply Enchanting ran a great race today at Del Mar R#3, closing in on the clear leader deep in the stretch to almost get there, only loosing by a head at the wire and finishing 4 lengths ahead of the 3rd place horse. Very exciting performance and we'll post more when we receive the Equibase and trainer reports. 

AFTER RACE REPORT

Simply Enchanting bounced back nicely this afternoon at Del Mar, missing by a head to in-form Edge Racing runner Normandy Queen. (Edge is MRH's other division and Normandy Queen is currently undefeated.)

Your filly took a bump from the horse to her inside at the break, but continued right along to stalk from third. Normandy Queen looked home free heading for home, but Simply Enchanting continued to respond to rider Antonio Fresu’s urging. She found another gear once she switched leads at the top of the lane, gobbled up ground on the leader, but just ran out of room.

Regardless of the tough beat, we have to be very heartened by that performance and excited to see Simply Enchanting build on that improved run next time.

We’ll see how she comes back and weigh options with trainer Phil D’Amato, but another try in a similar spot would be logical.

Guinevere Works at Keeneland

Guinevere turned in an easy solo five furlong drill in 1:05 flat under exercise rider Julio Garcia this morning at Keeneland. The daughter of Justify went wide in the turn and wasn't asked for anything in the final stretch. 

We caught up with trainer Wesley Ward following the work who said he was pleased with what he saw. The current plan is to target a first-level allowance going one flat mile on the turf at Belterra Park on Sept. 20th or Sept. 25th. 

Guinevere should get in one to two works ahead of this target.

Fancy Quality Runs a Strong Work from the Gate

Fancy Quality seems to be coming online as she runs a strong work, 4th fastest of 116 on the Belmont dirt training track. Her time of 48.52 for 4F starting from the gate is be far the sharpest work we've seen from our daughter of Wootton Bassett in some time.

Workout Update 9/1/2024

Fancy Quality returned to the work tab yesterday morning with a sharp half mile drill in :48.52, returning as the fourth quickest from 116 workers over the Belmont training track. 

We spoke with trainer Kenny McPeek this morning who reported, our daughter of Wootton Bassett is doing well and should be ready to run later this month. Kenny has his eye on a six furlong turf maiden special weight on September 21st at Belmont at the Big A which would give our filly two more works.

Seismic Beauty Turns in a Huge Performance!

Seismic Beauty won her second start by a huge span of daylight in some very fast fractions today at Del Mar. So excited about this girl's performance. Dare we start to dream of the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies...or is it too soon to have our head in the clouds? :)

We'll follow up with the after race report when we receive it, but here's the race video. 

Simply Enchanting Entered in Stakes, But On Second Thought...

Simply Enchanting has been enterred in the G3 Torrey Pines this Saturday at Del Mar, August 31st. 

With no entry fee required, we'll be taking a look at the field, though we have a pretty good idea of the expected contenders already. If we ultimately feel that one of the allowance races mentioned previously would be a better spot, she may opt out of the Torrey Pines and re-enter one of the alternative races.

Blue Devil Turns in First Work Back

Blue Devil had his first breeze since shipping to Ellis Park covering three furlongs in :39.80 yesterday morning. Our veteran has settled in well and went an easy three-eighths as expected since it was his first breeze back at the race track.

Fancy Quality Breezed at Belmont Park

Fancy Quality transitioned to Belmont Park last week and breezed four furlongs this past Friday over the training track. She was credited with a final time :49.77. 

She breezed in company with an unraced French-bred colt, Chou Chou d’Aven, who was purchased from the same French sale as Fancy Quality. 

She should return to the work tab later this week and we will follow up with more information.

Fireball Birdie Workout Report and Possible Plans

Fireball Birdie returned to the work tab this morning at Remington Park, covering four furlongs in :51.78. He breezed solo this week and is possible for an allowance race on September 4th. 

While it is a bit of a quicker turnaround, our colt did have six weeks between races recently and ran well off a three-week turnaround when breaking his maiden. 

Entries will be taken tomorrow for this spot and we will leave it up to trainer Steve Asmussen to make a final entry decision. It is a substitute race in the condition book, meaning it’s not guaranteed to be used on the 4th even if it receives enough entries.

Here's The Kicker Post Race Update

Here’s the Kicker bounced out of Friday’s race in good physical order! She earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 72. 

Isle Blue Update

We checked in on Isle Blue this morning during our owner farm visit to Miacomet Farm. 

Our daughter of Speightstown looked tremendous, already filling out in her short time at the farm. She remains hand walking daily and in approximately another two weeks she will begin paddock turnout.

Here's The Kicker Race Update

Here’s the Kicker lost a heartbreaker Friday afternoon in Gulfstream Park’s fourth race, finishing second by only a neck. 

Our daughter of Liam’s Map sat a perfect trip, stalking right off of her stablemate and the eventual winner, #8 Stormy Mitole. It was a pretty straightforward and uneventful trip this afternoon with limited excuses. It was a heck of an effort from Here’s the Kicker, but she was second best today. 

Perhaps with a straighter path in the stretch she would have come out on top, but all in all we were quite pleased with the effort. With the scratch of #5 Lionza this morning, it eliminated a major pace presence allowing Stormy Mitole to get the lead on her own.

We’ll regroup and look for a similar spot next time, potentially even looking for more distance (one mile), but will discuss our options with Saffie Joseph Jr. He remains high on our filly and believes there are plenty of races still to be won by her.

Catalyst Update

MRH checked in with Tristan de Meric this afternoon who reports Catalyst is doing well and ready for her first breeze this week. Right now, their plan is to give her four breezes at the farm and they expect she will be ready to ship back to the track towards the end of September.

Seize The Grey Work and Update

Seize the Grey breezed five furlongs in 1:01.80 this morning over a “good” Oklahoma track at Saratoga. 

We remain on schedule for the G1 Pennsylvania Derby on September 21st at Parx. Nominations will close on September 4th. 

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas reported that he plans to space out his breezes every nine or 10 days for now--keeping him fit and happy. 

He will remain in Saratoga until they ship to Parx, which will be mid-September.

Blue Devil Update

Blue Devil is doing fantastic at Sequel Training Center with Susan Montayne. We have had to battle weather and track conditions of late but he was on the muscle during his daily gallop this morning. Susan feels he is ready to head off to the track and do more. 

He is scheduled to ship to Ellis Park on Tuesday, joining Steve Assmusen’s string there. We’ll report back once he arrives with Steve.

Secret Crush Graduates to Turnout in Big Grass Paddock

Dr. Wes Sutter gave Secret Crush the green light to move from round pen turnout to a large grass paddock. 

He had his first morning out on the grass today and it’s safe to say he was very happy.

A video was included which showed his expansive paddock where he should be able to get a lot of good exercise and plenty of fresh grass. Progress, for sure! :)

Isle Blue Update

Isle Blue settled in nicely at Miacomet Farm and has recently started hand-walking. She has about seven weeks to go in her rehabilitation which will include three weeks of hand-walking and four weeks of paddock turnout before she is reevaluated by Dr. Bramlage.

We will follow up in the coming weeks on our daughter of Speightstown.

Seize The Grey Update: Options?

 “The Coach," via a call this morning following Seize the Grey's five-furlong breeze (1:01.44 over the Oklahoma) said that he would like to target the G1 Pennsylvania Derby. 

Since STG has been doing so well, Lukas was still thinking the Travers was worth considering, but after looking at the potential field and assessing the risk of retirement due to the "performing" clause in our stallion deal, he believes the PA Derby will be the best spot for our colt. D. Wayne always thought the track configuration at Parx suited Seize the Grey’s style best when we first discussed "the big three" race options, which included the G1 Travers, G1 Pennsylvania Derby, and G1 California Crown.

The last option we discussed was the G1 California Crown, but Lukas believes a race against older horses on the West Coast will be tougher than the straight 3-year-old option in the PA Derby. While there's no "top dog" in the older category in Southern California, with the new purse upgrade, it would not be surprising if this race attracts various shippers. 

Although the potential $5-million bonus is alluring to everyone, we need to make sure we put our colt in the best spot to perform, and right now, Lukas favors the PA Derby. 

Things can always change, and we have Gainesway's support on either race, so it really will come down to what Lukas thinks is best for STG as we get closer to the PA Derby. 

This a major decision for his career and we want to make sure we evaluate each option and place him in ultimately what we all believe will give him the best chance to win.

Good Cop: Update from Eclipse

We received an upbeat report on Good Cop as he continues his break at Fair Hill: 

As you know, we have always held Good Cop in high esteem and that remains the case.

The NY-Bred son of Tiz the Law had some growing pains when he got into the Pletcher Program in NY, but he's handling his rehab at Fair Hill very well and we're encouraged by his progress.

We believe this move will serve Good Cop very well in due time.

While we all would have loved to have seen him flaunt his talent at Saratoga this summer, I have every faith our patience will pay off.

We'll report in coming weeks as he progresses and gets back into light exercise to build back up.

Simply Enchanting Work Back After Race

Simply Enchanting had her first breeze over the Del Mar turf course this morning, covering five furlongs in 1:03 flat. She worked on the inside of MGSP Almendares. 

Jockey Tyler Baze was aboard in today’s breeze noting, “She was looking around a bit early on but much better when she got company.”

This was certainly an encouraging work and while the final time was not extremely quick, she finished much better than in recent weeks — galloping out strongly past the wire.

Seize The Grey has been Nominated to the Travers Stakes!

A big surprise, to be sure, since we thought he was going to bypass the race, but this is probably being left open as an available option more than a set plan. We'll see what happens.

Among other nominees are Dornoch (Belmont winner), Fierceness (Jim Dandy winner), Honor Marie (Kentucky Derby competitor), Sierra Leone (2nd in the Kentucky Derby), Batten Down (3rd in the Jim Dandy)...and YES, the monster filly Thorpedo Anna (THREE Grade 1 wins in a row, including the Kentucky Oaks!). 

The Coach is also looking at two other stakes at this time, one in Pennsylania and one on the West Coast. We'll keep you posted!

Seismic Beauty Update

Seismic Beauty is in great order out of her debut according to trainer Bob Baffert. She was spotted galloping this morning and will likely return to the work tab on either Friday or Saturday.

There are two maiden special weights in the final condition book at Del Mar; a six-furlong option on August 30th and a one-mile option on August 29th. Bob’s immediate reaction after the race was to sprint her back one time but we’ll see how she trains and let our Hall of Fame trainer make that final decision as we get closer.

Seize The Grey - Possible Next Steps

Seize the Grey returned to the work tab on Monday morning over the Oklahoma Training Track at Saratoga and was credited with five furlongs in :59.60. Admittedly, this was a bit sooner than we were expecting to see him back on the work tab, but trainer D. Wayne Lukas continues to be pleased with Seize the Grey's status since the Jim Dandy. We have had various chats with “The Coach” while our team was at the Saratoga sale this past week, game-planning our next move.

Despite the sharp work earlier this week, we would like to bypass the G1 Travers and instead give him additional time as we believe that will give him his best chance to rebound. It’s incredible what this colt has been able to accomplish this year, but he has had to overcome a very tough campaign, which included seven races in six months while at the highest level. The plan will be to point to either the G1 Pennsylvania Derby (Sept. 21) or the G1 California Crown (Sept. 28) with the hope of making a run at the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile--but of course, a run in the Breeders' Cup will depend on a good effort in one of those two prior race options.

Here's The Kicker Runs 4th After Big Close

Our Liam's Map filly, Here's The Kicker, closed out what has turned out to be a pretty unbelievable weekend. Five starts with 2 wins, 2 VERY close just-got-nipped-at-the-wire 2nds, and a 4th from Kicker at Gulfstream today. 

Her finish was better than it sounds considering the ground she made up late in the stretch to be closing in fast on the 3rd place finisher after the announcer declared she "was done" -- and she did it in a 99 degree heat index coming off a 10 month layoff and first time on turf. 

All-in-all, we think she's set up for a big move forward next out, but we'll see. She's trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr. 

UPDATE: RACE RECAP

Here’s the Kicker ended up fourth in her comeback race yesterday afternoon at Gulfstream. She broke well and was in a good spot early on while on the outside, but struggled to quicken into the turn. She then found herself in a bit of an awkward position and it appeared as if her race may have been over at that point. But she ended up staying on decently and galloped out well.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said a race like that could make you consider stretching her out on the grass next time, but he feels getting her back on the dirt would be best and is keen to see her back on it. 

“Her last couple of works were much better than she showed,” said Saffie.

It was great to hear Saffie’s positivity following the race and it was great to see our daughter of Liam’s Map back in the starting gate. She exited the race in good order but a Beyer Speed Figure has yet to be released.

Seismic Beauty Debut - Just Caught at the Wire for 2nd

Seismic Beauty ran a thrilling debut, breaking well, staying with the leaders, going to the lead and pulling away in the stretch, only to be caught by One Magic Philly (Good Magic) just before the wire to come in 2nd by a neck. (The team behind One Magic Philly is none other than Simply Enchanting's trainer/jockey team -- Phil D'Amato and Antonio Fresu.)

We're super proud of Beauty's effort and believe she'll do better next out now that she has one under her belt.

Guinevere WINS!

So Guinevere, our Keeneland "turf" filly won on dirt -- in the mud -- at Belterra Park today! 

After a not so encouraging start, she took over late and ran like a boss! We're so very proud of our beautiful daughter of Justify who appeared to really come into her own with this dominant win by considerable daylight. She earned a 81 Equibase figure even over the mud, her second fastest to date!

She looked fantastic, too, having put on some weight and muscle. Definitely starting to look like her father's daughter. :D

Maybe more dirt racing ahead? We'll see what's next for her.

Fancy Quality Update

Fancy Quality remains in good order at Keeneland, recently moving over to trainer Kenny McPeek’s barn on Rice Road at Keeneland. She has picked up galloping as of late and shouldn’t be far away from a breeze.

UPDATE

Fancy Quality was back on the work tab 8/3/24, breezing three furlongs in :38.80 over the Keeneland all weather training track. Trainer Kenny McPeek said the training track at Keeneland has been very beneficial for her. 

She will remain on a weekly work schedule pending all things continue in good order after each work.

Secret Crush

Secret Crush finished his therapy this week at Silver Springs. Dr. Wes Sutter has been pleased with our colt and his progress over the weeks. He will remain on round-pen turnout for a few additional weeks. Meanwhile, some of the owners had the opportunity to visit him.

Pioneer Prince....WIN and Claimed

Pioneer Prince ran a brilliant race with Mike Smith aboard, breaking sharply and winning wire-to-wire. Unfortunately, our concerns were valid and he was claimed. He now will be leaving our stable and we're really sad to see this guy go.

Catalyst Update

The team at De Meric Farm passed along updated photos of Catalyst galloping this morning. She looks great and they remain very pleased with her progress.

Blue Devil Update

Blue Devil continues to do great with Susan Montayne in Ocala, FL and completed his first bit of speed work this morning. 

He two-minute licked a quarter-mile (two furlongs). The term “two-minute lick” is used because when a horse travels a mile in two minutes each furlong takes 15 seconds.

Susan has been thrilled with how he’s done since returning to training and will continue picking up the pace each week

Nakoma Update

Our daughter of red-hot freshman sire Vekoma was recently taken out of training for some heat in her leg. Trainer Jena Antonucci went ahead and had Nakoma's tendon scanned this morning and the findings were what we would hope for--she has no lesion or any notable damage or injury. She's just going through a growth spurt and needs some time to allow her body to catch up so as to avoid an actual injury. 

The short version is that Nakoma will remain in the barn in Saratoga, but they'll back off on her training for the next 30 days or so. Patience is the name of the game with these young horses, and Nakoma's in great and attentive hands. 

We just want to state again, that we are so glad this promising filly is in Jena's barn where she's getting daily hands-on observation by her talented and knowledgeable trainer. It's the reason a possible issue was caught before it developed into a major setback. Thank you, Jena! :D

Straight to Glory Workout Report

 Straight to Glory was back on the tab as planned this morning at Keeneland, covering four furlongs in :51.20. He breezed on the inside of a mate and proved best in this work. 

Given the minor gap between works, Wesley wasn’t looking for anything faster than this and he will hopefully remain on a weekly schedule from here on out.

Seize The Grey Post-Jim Dandy Update

Seize the Grey exited the Jim Dandy in good physical order according to trainer D. Wayne Lukas. 

D. Wayne is not counting out the G1 Travers, but we are also exploring other options. A stronger showing in the Jim Dandy certainly would have made the decision more straightforward.

We need to be tactical with our next race target as it’s an important race for his career to continue for the remainder of the year. While we don’t have a lot of time between now and a spot in September or so, we have explored the idea of freshening him up as much as possible after what’s been a busy first half of the season and point to one final prep before a G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile run.

Races like the G1 California Crown, G1 Pennsylvania Derby or perhaps something at his home base of Churchill Downs are all under consideration, but we’ll let the dust settle a bit more and talk things over further with The Coach, the team at Gainesway before firming up plans.

Isle Blue Update

Isle Blue currently under the care of Dr. Larry Bramlage has been released to Miacomet Farm. 

His recommendations and instructions are as follows:

• Two weeks of stall rest
• Three weeks of stall rest with hand walking.
• 30 days of paddock turnout
• Following paddock turnout, radiograph both ankles to determine readiness for training.

These next two months will be on the quiet side for Isle Blue as rest will be the most important thing for our daughter of Speightstown. We will post further updates as they are available.

Nakoma Update

We caught up with trainer Jena Antonucci today to discuss Nakoma's status as we were hoping to see her return to the work tab this past weekend. 

Jena noted that the filly has been carrying some warmth in a tendon in her left front fore and for that reason she's remained patient/conservative with her training. There is no effusion and the filly hasn't been lame, but she's likely going through some sort of physical changes that Jena is hopeful are just typical "baby stuff."

If the heat persists through this week, she'll run some additional diagnostics (I.e. ultrasound the tendon), but as of this moment Jena isn't overly concerned. 

We're in no rush with the filly and will just let Jena guide her along at the pace she deems appropriate. 

Seize The Grey Race Recap

Seize the Grey finished fourth of six in the Jim Dandy on Saturday with a pretty good trip and no obvious excuses.

He broke cleanly, and was guided into a rail spot by Jaime Torres to sit fourth down on the fence as they went an average pace. He had every chance heading for home, but just never got going from there.

While he had been closer to the pace in his last few races, we did not mind that ride at all and don’t think showing more speed early would have resulted in a better finish. Longshot Pony Express was hard-ridden to the front (but later finished last), and Fierceness figured to be piloted aggressively as well (and was), so forcing the issue would’ve only gotten Seize the Grey involved in a potential speed duel.

Jaime had been instructed to let Seize the Grey find his own rhythm and put himself where he wanted to be, and that’s what he did. He felt what we saw—they were in a great spot nearing the lane, but just didn’t fire.

Ultimately, Seize the Grey was a bit flat again and once again just didn’t run back to his big effort in the Preakness. 

We’ll see how he comes back, huddle up with the team and share the game plan when we have it.

Our Recap

Of course, this was a major disappointment for us in that "Ceasar" didn't run much more competitively. He seemed primed for a huge effort, but was really bothered by the kickback when he didn't go to the lead, and this is not the first time that has happened. He's won at Saratoga before, and that was going right to the front and never taking any kickback. He won the Preakness at Pimlico the same way. 

It may be that Ceasar simply needs to have the lead when kickback is going to be an issue, and that hopefully he can handle any speed duels that develop on the front end. 

A change in distance has also been suggested, but we don't see the scenario playing out any differently if kickback is involved. 

We'll see where he goes from here.

 

Seismic Beauty Work Out Report and Possible Entry

Seismic Beauty breezed five furlongs from the gate again this morning at Del Mar. She was credited with a final time of :59.40.

Our daughter of Uncle Mo worked on the outside of her stablemate, breaking a step slow still but much better than last week. She powered down the stretch through the early part of this work, allowing her workmate to get on even terms into the turn and took over command in the later stages. 

Trainer Bob Baffert was extremely pleased, noting he is going to consider a six and one-half furlong maiden special weight on August 3rd for our filly. We’ll make sure she exits the work in good order but if everything continues well, the plan would be to enter on Wednesday for next Saturday. 

A Day To Remember Runs 3rd

A Day To Remember ran a great race for his first start back after a very long layoff. It was fun to see him picked by almost everyone at FanDuel as the likely winner. He finished a game 3rd giving only 1/2 a length to the winner and finishing a head behind the 2nd place finisher, after running at or near the front for most of the race. Very game effort and he should do better next out with the added fitness from this race.

Here's The Kicker

Here’s the Kicker breezed four furlongs in :47.70 while on the inside of stablemate Champions Dreams. This was another solid breeze from our daughter by Liam’s Map who is inching closer to the races. She is now about ready for her 2024 debut!

While we have not received confirmation from trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., we expect him to consider a maiden special weight that will be contested over five furlongs on the grass on August 4th at Gulfstream Park. 

With entries being taken this Saturday, we’ll see how she exits the work tomorrow and have further conversations with Saffie if he feels she is ready. 

Adaay In Asia Claimed

Adaay in Asia had a good early race today at Del Mar, improving from 5th to 3rd before falling back in the stretch to finish 7th. 

She was claimed out of the race, along with four other horses. 

We now bid another horse farewell from our steadily dwindling stable. Retirements and claims have hit us hard the last couple of months. 

Adios, Adaay. You are a lovely girl, and we hope you find a good life and many successes on the road ahead. 

We'll continue to follow her throughout her racing career, as we have the three other horses who've been claimed from our stable. 

Lady Blitz Retirement

Unfortunately, the second tie-back performed on Lady Blitz has failed. We knew it would be a long shot re-doing the surgery, but given we had come this far, we felt we had to try again. It is apparent now that we have no other option but to retire Lady Blitz.

Carrie Brogden of Machmer Hall, which consigned at the Saratoga Select Sale in 2021, has generously offered to take Lady Blitz and assist in the process of retraining and rehoming her.

Follow Up

We are pleased to report Lady Blitz arrived safely at Machmer Hall where she will transition into her second career. Carrie Brogden shared a video of her out in the pasture this morning.

A Day To Remember Paddock Schools at Del Mar

A Day To Remember paddock schooled at Del Mar today, ahead of his 2024 debut on Friday. A Day To Remember has run once before, on 7/29/2023 at Del Mar. It was the same day Seize The Grey broke his maiden in his second start at Saratoga. We're hoping "Remy" can make up for lost time. 

Adaay in Asia also paddock schooled in the same group, but was not caught on camera. 

Good Cop Taking a Break

Our exciting 2YO son of Belmont winner, Tiz The Law (first crop), is going to take a break after it was determined his muscles and joints are showing some signs of stress. Not surprising for a 2YO just starting serious training, and we're 100% on board with addressing a problem before it develops and giving these babies the time they need to mature into strong and competitive athletes.

The downside is that he probably won't have a start at Saratoga this summer, but that's okay. We think he has a bright future ahead, and are glad he's being given every opportunity to develop at his own pace and grow into his frame. You may recall Seize The Grey was given a freshening last October and took most of the winter off -- and look where he is now!

A Day To Remember Update

A Day to Remember had his final tune-up this morning ahead of Friday’s maiden special weight, absolutely cruising over the Seaside oval. Trainer Mark Glatt was extremely pleased stating, “He’s ready to roll.” 

Glatt had a solid opening weekend at Del Mar, winning three races including yesterday’s Wickerr S. 

Let's hope that momentum will carry into next week.

Here's The Kicker Workout and Update

Here’s the Kicker returned to the work tab yesterday morning, breezing five furlongs in 1:01.05 over the Palm Meadows main track. 

She breezed on the inside of stablemate Holiday Pay. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. reported, “I thought she moved well with a colt that’s been in good form in his works. We should run in this book that just came out. I’m happy with her.”

We will follow up once a race target has been picked out.

Seismic Beauty Work Out

Seismic Beauty breezed a half mile from the gate this morning at Del Mar under jockey Kazushi Kimura. She was credited with a final time of :46.20. (Her official time was slightly more, as you'll see below.)

Breaking on the outside of a stablemate, your daughter of Uncle Mo completely missed the break and spotted her workmate a few lengths. Once recovering, she switched to her correct lead near the wire and traveled well, gaining a bit of ground on her work partner. Though she was never able to get on even terms with her workmate, trainer Bob Baffert was still pleased with the effort. 

“I thought I had her more prepared from the gate. She’ll be much better next time,” he said.

We’ll expect to see her remain on a weekend work schedule pending everything remains in good order. 

In spite of not catching her work partner, Seismic Beauty turned in a very nice time for 4 furlongs.

Isle Blue Works

Isle Blue, our 2YO Speightstown filly, has turned in her best work yet for 4F. Details as follows:

This was her 7th official work, and her 2nd from the gate.

Trainer Christophe Clement identified her gate work as potentially holding her back from an August start, so we hope this was a step in the right direction. 

A Day To Remember is Entered

At long last, A Day To Remember has been entered to run at Del Mar on Friday. This info is as follows:

Our American Pharoah colt has not run since July 29 of last year, which coincided with Seize The Grey's second start and first victory. We wish our boy well as he attempts to make up for lost time.

 

Nakoma Update

Nakoma did not record an official breeze this week. She is doing well, but Jena Antonucci decided to focus on gate work for the filly this week, after Nakoma put in a particularly spirited gallop one morning after breaking from the gate. After that, Jena didn't feel an official breeze was necessary or prudent. Nakoma will likely breeze again some time this coming week and we'll report back after she does. 

Seize The Grey Entered in the G2 Jim Dandy, Draws Post 2

HERE WE GO! 

Seize The Grey has been entered in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga next Saturday, July 27th. The race is #10 on the program and will be run at 1-1/8 miles. "Ceasar" will start from Post 2 with Jaime Torres will be up. The race is at 5:43 ET / 3:43 MT. 

Other entries include Sierra Leone (Post 1), Batten Down (Post 3) and Fierceness (Post 6). Only six horses were entered in the race. Fierceness scratched out of the Haskell Stakes on Saturday to run here instead. 

The last three horses to win the Jim Dandy were Forte (2023), Epicenter (2022) and Essential Quality (2021). 

Adaay In Asia Update

Sometimes things don't go according to plan. 

Our beautiful Adaay In Asia, who was purchased after a 4 race win streak in the UK, has yet to win a race in the US. This girl shines in the morning, running very quick times, but can't seem to put it together in the afternoons for her races - most of them stakes. 

Sadly, the managing entity has decided to drop her in class.

Isle Blue Update

Isle Blue galloped this morning over the Oklahoma track at the Spa. She returned to the work tab on Monday, breezing four furlongs in :49.85 over the Oklahoma track. 

The Clement team is pleased with how she is doing physically but has had some issues with her at the gate. From a fitness standpoint, the barn feels she is only a few weeks away from being ready to debut but she will need to make some additional progress at the gate before considering race options.

If she progresses quickly at the gate, we could have a few options in early August to consider (see below):

August 4th: Maiden Special Weight - 6F

August 11th: Maiden Special Weight - 7F

Blue Devil Update

Blue Devil is currently a week ahead of his train-back schedule and is pictured galloping today. He is expected to head to Steve Asmussen in about a month. Blue Devil is a 5YO campaigner who is graded stakes placed and has earnings of over $350,000. He's by Uncle Mo out of a daughter of Lemon Drop Kid. He ran E-speed figures in excess of 100 in his last four starts. Excited to see this guy back in competition!

Seize The Grey Workout

Seize The Grey Update: "Ceasar" turned in a 6F work this morning in 1:11.52 that was described as a "sharp breeze." He was the only horse that worked this distance. The Coach said he looked "exceptionally well" and that for him to do what he just did "really encouraged" him. 

He also commented that the track was much "loser and sandier" on Belmont day than it's current condition, which seems much better suited to Ceasar's running style. 

Mr. Lukas will make the determination in the coming days if Ceasar will have another work prior to his expected start in the G3 Jim Dandy Stakes on July 27th and we'll keep you posted. 

There are currently 19 horses nominated, and official entries will be taken this Sunday, July 21st.

Simply Enchanting Update

"Ella" has returned to California from Churchill Downs after her disastrous last race, her poor performance not being attributable to anything except a very high heat index that day. 

She breezed in company at Santa Anita with recent 2YO stakes winner Vodka With a Twist, covering four furlongs in :47.20 for the 5th fastest time of 88 works. Although the time and ranking sounds exceptional, our daughter of Nyquist was second best when it came time to quicken and was a bit dull according to her exercise rider Jessica Pyfer. 

We watched the video that was sent to us and agree that, although Ella ran a fast time, she just didn't seem to go with Vodka when the filly took a run at her. 

Trainer Phil D’Amato reported that Simply Enchanting is in perfect order physically, but still feels something seems off with her. As a result, Phil will run another full blood panel on her to ensure her liver enzymes and everything else is in good order. 

We’ll report back once she settles in at Del Mar or we receive any additional information.

Legitify (Previously Claimed) Back for Another 1000 Yarder

Legitify (recently claimed from us) will run in his 2nd 1000-yarder at Los Alamitos tomorrow. This time he will be running non-winners of 2. 

The race is open to TBs/QHs, but all entries appear to be TB. Legitify won his last 1000 yard race on June 29th.

Seismic Beauty Works a Bullet in Yesterday's Breeze

Seismic Beauty (Uncle Mo x Knarsdale by Medaglia d'Oro) breezed five furlongs in 1:00 flat yesterday for the bullet at Los Alamitos. She breezed by herself and did it very well, finishing up with good energy. Assistant Trainer Mike Marlow had her galloping out 6F in 1:14.40. It's very exciting to see this talented 3YO filly progressing the way she is, but she still has a few more tests ahead. Secret Crush was cleared to begin round pen turnout at Silver Springs. He will receive a gradual increase in the amount of additional space he is given.

Here's The Kicker Turns in a Nice Breeze Over a Wet Track

Our Liam's Map filly, Here's The Kicker, is moving forward after her rest break, re-train and change of trainer to Saffie Joseph Jr. earlier this year. She just turned in a very nice work at Palm Meadows Training Center on wet dirt track. Very excited to see what's next.

 Lane Way arrives at Silver Springs pending acceptance into Old Friends.

Adaay in Asia Runs a Bullet "Maintenance" Work

Adaay in Asia breezed a maintenance half-mile this morning over the Santa Anita training track under jockey Armando Ayuso. She was credited with a final time of :47.60.

This returned a bit faster than what trainer Phil D’Amato was looking for, but she did it all on her own. Your daughter of Adaay will have one final breeze, which will come at Del Mar before her next start.

Her next start will no doubt be a drop in class to a claiming race, which is unfortunate considering how brilliantly she's been working on the All Weather Track, which isn't yet open for racing, but will be in the near future. If we can hold on to her, a switch in surface may be what she needs, but we don't know if she'll have that opportunity. Now that Golden Gate is closed  :'(  there are currently no other options that we are aware of for competing on an All Weather Track in California. 

Seize The Grey Update

We got a report from trainer D. Wayne Lukas discussing Seize the Grey’s breeze yesterday. He could not have been more pleased. He said it was a super work, and he did it all on his own power and galloped out in 1:12 2/5 for six furlongs. 

Wayne went as far as to say it was one of Seize the Grey’s best works ever.

A decision on his next race hasn’t quite been hammered out yet, but Wayne said he would be happy in either spot (Jim Dandy at Saratoga or Haskell at Monmouth Park). We’re going to monitor the expected fields for a few more days, confer with the Gainesway team, and pick a direction. The decision is not critical until before the Haskell draws next Wednesday.

Once we his next start is officially chosen, we’ll post an update. 

Nakoma Puts in a "Stellar" Work!

Nakoma, our recently named daughter of Vekoma, turned in a "very stellar" half-mile breeze this morning at Saratoga, in 48:83. 

According to the report, she was a bit too much for her workmate to handle, and finished out way ahead, moving in an effortless gallop and not being asked for much from her rider. 

Trainer Jena Antonucci was very pleased, as you can imagine. (So are we!)

Simply Enchanting Back in California

Simply Enchanting returned to Santa Anita Park this past Friday in good order. She has since picked up training and returned to a routine training schedule in Southern California. 

We will follow up in the coming days.

Seize The Grey has a Stallion Deal!

We have some BIG news. 

An offer has been accepted for Seize The Grey to stand stud at the beautiful Gainesway Farm in Lexington, KY after he finishes his career. There, he'll join legendary stallions such as Tapit, McKinzie, Afleet Alex, Karakontie, Spun To Run, and others. 

"Ceasar" will continue to run for the foreseeable future and has a potential road map laid out for him, should he continue to improve, as we anticipate he may as a son of the late, great Arrogate. 

Part of the deal includes the partnership retaining a small share of his breeding rights, so not only has this guy been our "Horse of a Lifetime," but we may have the opportunity to be involved in the future successes of his progeny and the hopeful extension of Arrogate's great legacy to the breed in the years to come. 

Once again, we have been blessed beyond measure and are so grateful to be counted among the many partners who bought into a chubby little rose grey yearling - one of Arrogate's very last foals - who blossomed into a champion and took us on this amazing journey over the last two years.

Seize The Grey Sizzles a :59.22 at Saratoga

Seize the Grey posted a sharp five-furlong work this morning in Saratoga, stopping the clock in :59.22. 

We will huddle up with trainer D. Wayne Lukas tomorrow, get his feedback on the work and how Seize the Grey came out of it, and work on nailing down a target between the Haskell and Jim Dandy.

A Day To Remember Update

A Day to Remember breezed 5F in 1:02 flat Sunday morning over the training track.

Our son of American Pharoah worked solo as trainer Mark Glatt has this colt in maintenance mode leading up to the maiden special weight in July 26th he is targeting. If entered, it will mark nearly a year since he last ran in his debut race, placing 3rd. 

From a fitness standpoint, we knew he would be more than ready by this time to go five furlongs and the biggest priority is keeping him happy and healthy. A Day to Remember will have one or two more breezes leading up to the race.

Lady Blitz Follow-Up

Lady Blitz underwent a second procedure today and all went smoothly thus far, Dr. Madison reported. As we saw after the first attempt, we are by no means out of the woods yet. The sutures will be removed in 10-12 days, and at that point another scope will be performed, followed by an additional scope at 30 days. Lady Blitz will otherwise be on stall rest and hand walked for the next month.

We’ll remain in contact with the team at Wavertree and will report back with updates on Lady Blitz’s recovery and the status of the tie-back as we receive more information.

Fancy Quality Update

Fancy Quality transitioned back to Keeneland last week where she has begun jogging and is due to be rechecked by Dr. Landry in the next few days. Stable Manager Alan Shell reported she was moving and doing well prior to leaving Magdalena. We don’t imagine it will take her long to pick things up pending clearance from Dr. Landry. 

Good Cop Update and Progress

Good Cop has been at Belmont with Todd Pletcher and after an initial breeze to get into Todd's program, he got the sniffles, which set him back a few.

While recovering from his baby cold, they also worked on a gluteal muscle that was a bit tweaked, so it'was a productive couple of weeks while he was on the mend.

The NY-Bred son of Tiz The Law (who happens to be off to a flying start at stud) is now 100% and will likely return to a breeze schedule within the week, give or take.

Good Cop has always impressed us, so hopefully that trend continues as he gets back into a workout pattern.

Fireball Birdie Race Recap

 Fireball Birdie checked in fifth beaten two lengths today at Lone Star Park.

He sat a good inside stalking trip early, but just couldn't quicken as much as he needed to in the lane.

He was running outside of his condition, and the true '2X' types dominated the race, running 1-2-3.

Considering the competition and that it was his first turf and two-turn attempt, we hope that this was an effort he can build on.

LANE WAY on Wait List for Old Friends

      We are pleased to report we have received positive news from Old Friends! While they have a long waitlist, they are interested in offering retirement placement for Lane Way.

     For the time being, Lane Way has remained at Sunshine Farm in Bradbury, CA, but the plan is to ship him to Silver Springs in Kentucky on Monday. Then he'll be near Old Friends when they hopefully accept him this fall. Our 7-year-old gelding has remained on stall rest during the initial period of his recovery, but it shouldn't be too long before he can be turned out in a small outside pen.

     We expect to have another update some time this summer from Old Friends regarding official placement. We hope to be able to visit him at Old Friends at some point in the future.

Here's The Kicker Workout Report

Here’s the Kicker breezed a solid half mile this morning at Palm Meadows Training Center and was credited with a final time of :50.40. 

Our daughter of Liam’s Map breezed on the outside of stablemate Spirit Moon, always traveling in hand. This is back-to-back solid breezes from Here’s the Kicker who appears to be moving in the right direction.

Caldera Update and Event

After a nice break since his purchase, Caldera, our stunning son of Liam's Map, is progressing nicely since graduating to jogging according to farm pre-trainer Dave Scanlon! According to Scanlon, "He is moving great. He looks good, and has grown and matured,” The next step for the colt will be to continue to build up his fitness in preparation for heading to joining "Coach" D. Wayne Lukas, hopefully in mid to late August.

In the meantime, Caldera owners will have the opportunity to visit the farm in Ocala, FL. During this visit, they will have the chance to get up close and personal with Caldera and watch him in action on the track in a morning training session. It's a fantastic opportunity for many of the owners to meet the horse and see his progress firsthand. The event will be held on Saturday, July 13th, from 10:45 AM to 11:30 AM.
