Catalyst to Make Next Start on Sunday

Catalyst makes her first start since April back at Oaklawn in Sunday’s fourth race, 12/22/2024. She’ll break from the 8 hole among a field of 10.

She fits this group on paper as they all have similar form to her--every member of the field would be considered “exposed” (I.e. they’ve had a number of starts without a breakthrough or winning effort). The average number of starts for the field is six.

Catalyst was a bit of a head-scratcher for us before her time off to address a sudden growth spurt with associated weight loss, and it remains to be seen just what she’ll do as a late-season sophomore.

Her pedigree does skew a bit towards later development, and trainer Steve Asmussen wins at a 19% clip with maidens first off six-month-plus lay-offs in dirt routes.

Fingers crossed that Catalyst comes out ready to run, but she may need the start from a fitness perspective before coming back to top racing form.
