Here are a few select screen shots from Coexist's race on Wednesday, 4/19/2023 at Keeneland. As we mentioned after the race, she had a very troubled trip in which she was stopped by another horse and shuffled back to 9th before the first turn, came out of the turn in 8th place, and she still managed to advance from 8th to take 3rd with a monster closing kick in the final strides -- and some very flattering commentary by the announcers.
It's a pretty major accomplishment to place in a race at Keeneland, especially with a horse who has only raced once, only beat one horse in that race, and has been on lay-up and retraining under a new trainer since. She was also starting on dirt for the first time.
Coexist has a very nice pedigree. Her sire, Creative Cause, a son of Giant's Causeway, qualified for the Kentucky Derby and ran 5th. His dam was Dream of Summer, who earned over $1.1m on the track with multiple graded stakes wins, and has produced three very successful offspring, all sired by Giant's Causeway, including Creative Cause, Destin (2nd in the Belmont) and Vexatious, a stakes winner and multiple stakes placed filly who won the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes as a 6YO.
- Creative Cause placed 5th in the Kentucky Derby in 2012, losing 3rd place in the final four strides and defeating Union Rags (7th), Gemologist (16th), and Take Charge Indy (19th).
- My Boy Jack (her 3/4 brother) ran in the Kentucky Derby and placed 5th, defeating Vinno Roso (9th), Firenze Fire (11th), Bolt D'Oro (12th), Noble Indy (18th) and Mendelssohn (20th).
- Zandon, out of a daughter of Creative Cause, ran 3rd in the Kentucky Derby in 2022 defeating Mo Donegal, Smile Happy, Classic Causeway, Taiba, White Abarrio, and Cyberknife. He is still competing in stakes as a 4YO.
- King Russell made it into this year's Derby as an also eligible, and though he didn't run in the top five, just to earn enough points to make it into the field this year says a lot about his talent and being one of the best of his crop to date. King Russell was runner-up in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby in April behind winner Angel of Empire.

Start of race, Coexist is 2nd from the back just ahead of #5 |
Approaching the turn, Coexist is still 2nd to last |
Coexist continues to advance on rail. |
Coexist, still advancing, is stopped by another horse, has to check (slow) and maneuver around that horse, shuffling her back to 9th again |
In the turn, Coexist in 9th place (#6, jockey with white sleeves) |
Coming off the turn, Coexist is in 8th (she's made a move off the rail and is the horse by herself in the middle. Jockey has white sleeves.) |
Coming into the stretch -- still in 8th place (horse just under the "3" in the "Race 3" on label) |
Late stretch, Coexist begins a late move, picking off horses to move into 6th position (You can just see her at the far left of the screen) |
The first and second place finishers. Camera was focused on them and Coexist is out of the photo. |
Coexist runs 3rd and is still gaining rapidly. (Nearest horse behind the two leaders) She caught the leaders in a powerful gallop out. |
