Legitify Update

Legitify (Justify x Sarrocchi - Galileo) remained on schedule and breezed three furlongs both solo on Friday, May 19th, and in company on Friday, May 26th at Wavertree.

The colt continues to progress in his training and is doing well overall, although he does have a tendency to get a bit warm. Trainer Ciaran Dunne feels it is not of any major concern especially as the humidity levels continue to rise in Ocala.

Legitify is scheduled to work over the turf course at Wavertree this Friday and we will report back following when we receive word about this work.

Following this next work, Ciaran feels your colt may be ready to transition to Southern California.

Here's a recent photo.

One Last Night '21 Update

One Last Night '21 (Wootton Bassett) isn't heard from much being that she was discovered as a yearling by trainer Kenny McPeek at a prestigious sale in France, purchased and imported to America. She has since been at his Silver Leaf training stable in Ocala, and other than being a part of the Ocala 2YO Showcase, where we first met her, she remains under Kenny McPeek's care.

The significant thing about her history is that Kenny McPeek has earned a reputation for finding gems at the sales. In the past, he's found horses like Curlin and Take Charge Lady, so he knows what to look for in a prospect. One Last Night 21's sire, Wootton Bassett, isn't particularly well-known in the US, but he was a French champion and is a phenomenal sire across the pond.

One Last Night ’21 is now in initial stages of training, which will be fairly easy and consisting mostly of jogging. The McPeek team will increase the intensity gradually and as they see fit.

We hope to have some on-track footage in the coming weeks, but for now, here are two recent photos of our girl, who we have affectionately dubbed our "Little Deuce Coupe."

Simply Enchanting Update

Our Nyquist daughter continues to grow and has now transformed from a sprint-y looking bulldog to what looks like a 2 turn filly!

The down side is she's growing so fast it's putting stress on her joints and muscles. Trainer Ciaran Dunne at Wavertree has decided to cancel her works until she has caught up with herself.

She'll be put in a paddock so she can keep moving and he doesn't believe she'll lose a lot of fitness until she's ready to work again. We're sincerely happy they're being cautious with her to give her time to grow up.

Here's a photo taken in the last couple of days.

Kindle '21 Work Out

Kindle ’21 had his first quarter-mile drill this morning, which he ran in 24.80 seconds (7/13).

Working on the inside of 2-year-old Sharpazano, the duo caught company from an additional stablemate Good Juju. Our 2-year-old colt was very competitive and professional throughout the work, galloping out strongly past the wire.

MRH discussed the work with trainer Mark Glatt following this first and easy breeze, who said that "He couldn’t have asked for better."

Kindle ’21 cooled down in good order and we’ll see how he progresses in the next few weeks.

An Old Friend Runs Saturday

Coexist is entered to run at Churchill Downs on Saturday in the 2nd, time 11:14 AM Mountain.

We know longer own Coe, after losing her in a claim last out, but we'll continue to follow her. She's currently the 2nd choice at the window.

Seize The Grey Runs 2nd Bullet Work

Well, that didn't go according to plan.

Seize The Grey runs his second bullet work this morning--this one faster than last week. Sub-36 seconds for 3 furlongs!

Horse Workout Notification

While his time is eye-opening, it wasn't what trainer D. Wayne Lukas was looking for, according to his analysis on the last work. We'll report back when we hear what he has to say about "Ceasar" and we get more details about his work out.

Work Out Report Follow-up

Seize the Grey breezed three furlongs on the outside of a trio of horses for D. Wayne Lukas. Stopping the clock in 35.20 seconds, this was the second straight bullet for Seize the Grey. The colt did everything correctly during the work, but was a bit slower in his gallop out compared to one of his workmates. This is understandable as they went very quick and Seize the Grey traveled a further distance being three-wide off the rail.

After the breeze, D. Wayne Lukas said in a video interview that our colt has been nothing but a professional since entering his barn. D. Wayne also hints at a possible start in June, which will come at Churchill Downs. The soonest we could possibly see Seize the Grey is in a maiden special weight going 5 ½ furlongs on June 15th with a purse of $120,000.

Edited to add: One of the partners did some research and apparently the two horses working with him were Social Affair, a grey/roan Munnings filly (sold for $425k at auction) and Just Steel, a bay colt by Justify (sold for 500k at auction). Definitely some quality workmates.

Lady Blitz Work out

Horse Workout Notification

Lady Blitz (2-Year-Old Filly)

Date: May 24, 2023
Track: MONMOUTH PARK
Distance: Four Furlongs
Time: 49:40 Breezing
Track Condition: Fast
Surface: Dirt
Rank: 14/50

Work Out Report:

Lady Blitz breezed a half mile in 49.40 seconds (14/50) while working in company this morning at Monmouth Park. Breezing on the outside of stablemate Maya’s Dream (3-year-old daughter of Laoban), our 2-year-old filly did everything right and proved to be the best of the duo.

Trainer Todd Pletcher oversaw this work and remains pleased with Lady Blitz’s overall progress. The Pletcher team is still considering some race options at Belmont and Monmouth in early June but we will first see how she responds out of this work and put together a plan from there.

Simply Enchanting's Growth Spurt Continues

MRH did a check-in with Wavertree Farm trainer Ciaran Dunne regarding Simply Enchanting this afternoon.

Ciaran opted to bypass last week's breeze as he feels our filly is still going through a bit of a growing phase and has moved her to a two week work schedule in light of this.

Later this week, she is scheduled to breeze on the turf in company as a bit of an experiment. We'll follow up with an additional update after she breezes and we receive more news.

The video supplied to us did reveal a much taller, gaunter filly than the girl we visited in Ocala in February, but we're sure she'll catch up to herself physically once she's over the rapid growth phase.

Lady Blitz Update

Lady Blitz remains in good order at Monmouth Park. Due to a significant amount of rain that hit New Jersey yesterday, your filly was not able to breeze this morning and the Pletcher team will work her when they see fit (likely Wednesday.)

She is ready to breeze from the gate and pending everything stays well, she is possible for a debut towards the beginning of June.

Mo Temptation Update After Temp Spike

Mo Temptation is improving but not yet one hundred percent since she spiked a temperature last week at San Luis Rey Downs. Assistant trainer Kim Marrs pulled a precautionary blood sample and has been keeping an eye on her SAA (Serum Amyloid A) levels, which returned higher than the norm. SSA indicates a stress or inflammatory response to what we believe is a “little bug” that she got. Physically, the filly remains in good order but since she did spend most of the week walking, will not breeze again tomorrow. Kim will recheck her SAA levels again tomorrow and put together a plan from there.

Simply Enchanting and Legitify Pair Up in a Work

Simply Enchanting (Nyquist x Enchante filly) and Legitify (Justify x Sarrocchi colt) performed a maintenance work in company at Wavertree Farm in Ocala on May 12, 2023.

Farm owner/trainer Ciaran Dunne said Simply Enchanting is still undergoing a growth spurt, and he will let her tell him when she is ready for more strenuous speed works in the coming weeks.

Here's a screen shot from the joint work. Simply Enchanting is the bay filly on the outside and Legitify is the chestnut colt on the inside next to the rail.

Song of the Lark '21 Update

Song of the Lark ’21 (Uncle Mo) is progressing in the right direction in Laredo, TX with Keith Asmussen.

Our 2-year-old colt has returned to routine training and is doing well. Keith reported that his knees were X-rayed on May 5th, and were nearing being closed. An additional set of X-rays will be taken towards the beginning of June. Keith expects for his knees to be fully closed at that time and explained when you see the progress his knees made in the most recent X-ray it usually doesn’t take much longer for them to fully close but every horse is different and we will continue to monitor this before he ships to trainer Steve Asmussen’s barn.

Our colt has been back in training but hasn’t started any serious speed work. Keith mentioned he is going to allow him to work a bit tomorrow, Saturday, May 20th.

He'd like to get three works into the colt before taking that additional X-ray in early June and will determine at that time if he is ready to ship to Steve's barn.

We'll keep you posted on any updates.

The Royal Duet - Double Update

Here’s an upate on both horses in The Royal Duet pairing, the Justify filly and the Cotai Glory colt.

Guinevere

Guinevere recorded another solid breeze this morning going a half-mile out of the gate at Keeneland in 49.60 seconds (29/57). Working on the inside of her stablemate, our 2-year-old filly traveled nicely and was definitely going the best of the pair in the later stages.

Trainer Wesley Ward, following her breeze, shared the sentiments that the work was impressive and moves her closer to a debut. Guinevere’s next breeze will come on the dirt at Keeneland and if all continues to progress Wesley is hopeful she maybe ready for a debut next month.

The filly did come back from the breeze with a touch of sensitivity in her right shin. Though it is nothing of major concern, she is a big filly and Wesley will let her tell him what to do. She will continue to jog for a few days and not rush her. Once he feels she is ready she will breeze again.

Obviously, that puts this year's Royal Ascot out of reach as the meeting begins in mid-June. However, that doesn’t mean the Ascot dream ends here; if she is as nice as we hope there are multiple potential options for 3-year-old fillies next year such as The Coronation Stakes or The Sandringham.

La Cuvee ‘21

We caught up again with trainer Wesley Ward regarding La Cuvee ’21 who continues to make progress since he started galloping. As he furthers in his training, Wesley opted to ship La Cuvee ’21 to Saratoga which will allow him to breeze on the grass as there are very few tracks that allow turf workers this time of year. The trainer looks forward to his highly-anticipated first breeze with the barn which will likely take place in the next 10 days or so.

Saratoga here he comes!

It appears La Cuvee ’21 is beginning to catch up to his amazing, precocious partner and we are looking forward to a lot of excitement from these two later this summer.

Update from D. Wayne Lukas: Seize The Grey

Seize The Grey had his first breeze at Churchill Downs this morning, working the three furlong bullet in 36.80 with Lemon Muffin. [She's a grey filly sired by Collected who has registered two successive bullet works. Seize The Grey's time was fastest out of nine works that morning.]

D. Wayne Lukas said Seize The Grey traveled well throughout and the riders did not ask for much throughout the work.

He added that he hopes to see your colt take a deep breath and slow down just a hair next week. Overall, this was a good first work for this colt.

We'll expect to see a slower time from Seize The Grey next week, with full realization that it won't be a regression.

Great start, Ceasar!

Coexist - 1st - Churchill Downs R4 5-12-23

UPDATE: Guinevere

Our Royal Ascot prospect jogged 1-1/4 miles this week over the Keeneland training track. Our 2-year-old partnership filly was feeling full of herself and has grown significantly in the past few months, maturing both physically and mentally. She is scheduled to breeze this coming week and we’ll report any updates from the Wesley Ward barn. Unfortunately, as of this time, without a start under her belt she is unlikely to be a contender for Royal Ascot next month (but miracles can happen). [Photo by professional photographer Karie Okerstrom taken at Keeneland earlier this month. Guinevere is on left.]

Kindle '21 Update

The MRH team checked in with trainer Mark Glatt Monday morning (5/15/23) following Kindle '21's gallop.

Mark gave his first impressions of the and reported he might have his first easy work (one or two furlongs) towards the end of the week.

In a video interview, he also said they observed Kindle '21 at Wavertree Farm in Ocala and liked the way he moved over grass, but that also seemed to translate to the dirt surface at Santa Anita. They added blinkers to keep him more focused during his work.

Update: Mo Temptation

Mo Temptation missed her work this week because she seemed a little off. Her malady is believed to be weather related, due to the extremes California has been experiencing, but they are keeping a very close eye on her.

Lady Blitz Update

Lady Blitz had her first half-mile breeze this morning at Monmouth Park, covering the four furlongs in an official time of 49.80. The Pletcher team had the daughter of Audible a touch quicker on their stopwatch in 49.37.

Lady Blitz breezed in company with two other stablemates and assistant trainer Stu Hampson reported, “She was much the best of the trio.”

Our partnership filly continues to handle everything thrown at her to this point. Over the coming weeks, the Pletcher barn will continue to increase the intensity of her breezes along with adding more gate work to her routine.

Coexist Photo from Today

Churchill Downs R5 win with Luis Saiz up
May 12, 2023

Coexist WINS Third Start!

Coexist made her 3rd start today in the 5th at Churchill Downs. She broke from the outside post, took up a forwardly placed position with the leaders, and used her closing kick to edge by the leading horse in the stretch to break her maiden.

This race was quite a bit different than her last start where she was ignored in the wagering. Prior to the race she was listed as the favorite until it shifted to another horse approaching post time.

However, there is a dark cloud to this happy story. Coexist was claimed in the race and has now left our stable. We are very saddened by this turn of events, after persevering with her all winter after she was injured in her first race at Saratoga in August, and seeing her spark to life in her second start a few weeks ago at Keeneland to run 3rd. We figured she'd break her maiden today, and so she did. Wish we could have held on to her as she'll probably move into the allowance ranks now.

Farewell, Coexist. We hope you have a very bright and safe future ahead, even though it won't be with us. :'(

Lady Blitz Update

Lady Blitz in her stall at Monmouth Park yesterday morning. Everything remains in good order following her first work at Monmouth and she will return this upcoming weekend with either her first easy half-mile or increase the intensity in another three-furlong move.

A Couple of Firsts - Seize The Grey and Kindle '21

Both having arrived at their respective barns -- Seize The Grey at D. Wayne Lukas's barn at Churchill Downs and Kindle '21 at Mark Glatt's barn at Santa Anita -- the two colts both got acquainted with their new tracks today.

Seize The Grey galloped a mile and an eighth easily and will continue to gallop daily for the next couple of weeks before beginning on a work schedule.

Kindle '21  took his first spin over the Santa Anita main track this morning. He jogged once around the surface with other Mark Glatt stablemates and seemed to enjoy the experience.

Both colts were described as behaving professionally.

Great start, you two!

She could fair well in this field, in spite of some well bred horses (by American Pharoah, Runhappy, etc.) and may have a shot at breaking her maiden in her third start. However, she is running for a tag.

Kindle '21 Arrives at Santa Anita

Things are happening fast, folks. (Sorry to bombard you with updates, but...)

KINDLE '21 (American Pharoah x Kindle) has arrived safely at Mark Glatt's barn at Santa Anita.

We got a short video clip which unfortunately I can't share, but he was definitely taking in the sights and talking to his stablemates.

The report said in part: The Glatt barn will allow him to become accustomed to his new surroundings over the next few days. He will likely start tack-walking tomorrow and begin on the track in the coming days.

While he’s been on a consistent work schedule in Ocala it will be a few weeks before he breezes over the Santa Anita track as he acclimates to his new program. (Photo taken earlier in Ocala.)

Seize The Grey Arrives at Churchill Downs

Seize the Grey ("Caesar") arrived safely at Churchill Downs this morning. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas will allow our partnership colt to settle in over the next few days and get a good feel for him as he adjusts to a new program.

He says he can still smell the roses. :)

We’ll report back with any news from the barn.

Photo from last week.

Coexist - Keeneland R3

Here are a few select screen shots from Coexist's race on Wednesday, 4/19/2023 at Keeneland. As we mentioned after the race, she had a very troubled trip in which she was stopped by another horse and shuffled back to 9th before the first turn, came out of the turn in 8th place, and she still managed to advance from 8th to take 3rd with a monster closing kick in the final strides -- and some very flattering commentary by the announcers.

It's a pretty major accomplishment to place in a race at Keeneland, especially with a horse who has only raced once, only beat one horse in that race, and has been on lay-up and retraining under a new trainer since. She was also starting on dirt for the first time.

Coexist has a very nice pedigree. Her sire, Creative Cause, a son of Giant's Causeway, qualified for the Kentucky Derby and ran 5th. His dam was Dream of Summer, who earned over $1.1m on the track with multiple graded stakes wins, and has produced three very successful offspring, all sired by Giant's Causeway, including Creative Cause, Destin (2nd in the Belmont) and Vexatious, a stakes winner and multiple stakes placed filly who won the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes as a 6YO.

  • Creative Cause placed 5th in the Kentucky Derby in 2012, losing 3rd place in the final four strides and defeating Union Rags (7th), Gemologist (16th), and Take Charge Indy (19th).
  • My Boy Jack (her 3/4 brother) ran in the Kentucky Derby and placed 5th, defeating Vinno Roso (9th), Firenze Fire (11th), Bolt D'Oro (12th), Noble Indy (18th) and Mendelssohn (20th).
  • Zandon, out of a daughter of Creative Cause, ran 3rd in the Kentucky Derby in 2022 defeating Mo Donegal, Smile Happy, Classic Causeway, Taiba, White Abarrio, and Cyberknife. He is still competing in stakes as a 4YO.
  • King Russell made it into this year's Derby as an also eligible, and though he didn't run in the top five, just to earn enough points to make it into the field this year says a lot about his talent and being one of the best of his crop to date. King Russell was runner-up in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby in April behind winner Angel of Empire.

Here are the photos of Coexist's race in sequence:

Simply Enchanting Update

Simply Enchanting is currently going through a growth spurt, and Wavertree Farms trainer Ciaran Dunne decided to hold off on shipping her until she gets through this stage. Although she was expected to ship in the next couple of weeks to trainer Phil D'Amato on the West Coast, this may be delayed until she gets through this "awkward stage."

We'll update the 2YO Status list to reflect this.

Disdainful's Old Rival Scores Big on Derby Day

General Jim just won the Pat Day Mile on Derby Day!!!

It was one of those "yell and scream for him to win, then burst into tears when he did it" moment.

General Jim and Disdainful ran 1/2 in a race at Keeneland last Fall, a week before the Breeders Cup, and that's when we knew we really had a horse. If Dain hadn't gotten sick, who knows where he would have been today, but there was probably a good chance he would have been running at the level of his old rival, General Jim, so it was a very bittersweet moment for us.

Hats off to jockey Luis Saez (who also rode General Jim in the race against Disdainful) and all the connections of this very tough horse, General Jim. He had a very troubled trip and prevailed with tremendous heart. (Photo is of Disdainful entering the starting gate in his race against General Jim that October day at Keeneland.)

Big Update for Seize The Grey

Off a successful work on Thursday, Seize The Grey (by Arrogate) has been scheduled to ship to Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas at Churchill Downs on Sunday, May 7th--the day after the Kentucky Derby!

The Royal Duet - Guinevere Photos

Wow, wow, wow! That's our Guinevere (with the blaze), taken at Keeneland by pro photographer Karie Okerstrom this morning and posted by a fellow partner. So excited about this girl!
