Well, it's been quite a day. Seize The Grey turned in another stellar performance in winning the G1 Pennsylvania Derby virtually wire-to-wire.
His record is now G1 G1 G2 and two allowance wins! We think this may have moved him into the top money earner sired by Arrogate (to date), but we'll see how the numbers shake out once Equibase updates.
Here's the race:
From MRH:
Seize the Grey Dominates PA Derby!
Congratulations! Seize the Grey showed what he’s made of this evening at Parx with a dominant performance in the $1-million G1 Pennsylvania Derby, triggering a $2-million kicker as part of his stud deal on top of everything else.
Your grey broke sharply, and was briefly challenged for the lead, but Jaime and Seize the Grey didn’t blink and managed to establish command down on the fence into the first turn. They posted a :23.89 opening quarter, and were able to slow it down nicely down the backside through a :49.25 half. Seize the Grey seemed to be inching clear of the competition entering the home bend, but the G1 Santa Anita Derby winner Stronghold was among those launching serious bids from the back of the pack.
Stronghold ranged up to challenge Seize the Grey at the top of the lane as favorite Dragoon Guard looked to sneak up the fence, but as soon as Seize the Grey saw Stronghold, he turned on the afterburners and kicked clear again with authority to open up several lengths.
This was obviously a pivotal race for Seize the Grey’s career, and he could not have answered the call any more emphatically. The G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile is the next target we’ve had in mind for a while, and will likely remain the goal, but we’ll see how the colt comes back and chat with Wayne in the coming days.
