Magical Ways Update

Disdainful has really taken the spotlight of late, but we have two more partnership horses getting set to debut.

The plan remains to debut Magical Ways at Aqueduct on Nov. 11th.

This colt produced another solid breeze yesterday at Belmont Park for trainer Bill Mott. The 3-year-old colt covered a half mile in 48.42 seconds (12/152) on the training track.

His sire (Maclean's Music) made history on his debut by winning in the fastest time ever for a first time starter, and Magic's works have been great, so there's quite an undercurrent of excitement in the partnership to see what he can do!

We also want to mention that another son of Maclean's Music -- Jackie's Warrior -- is expected to run in the Breeders Cup this weekend...and may even be the favorite in his race!

Milestone for Mo Temptation's Young Sire

As Mo Temptation continues to prepare for her upcoming career debut at Del Mar next month, we’re excited to share news that her freshman sire, Mo Town, was recognized with his first stakes winner yesterday at Keeneland.

Key of Life provided Mo Town with a score in the $200,000 Myrtlewood Stakes with her 6 3/4-length romp in the six-furlong dirt race. Yesterday’s gate-to-wire win represents Key of Life's third career victory from 4 starts.

We hope it's the harbinger of great things to come for Mo Temptation!

Video from Keeneland Live Yesterday

We have the live feed of Disdainful's race yesterday via YouTube for anyone wanting to see the race.

Forward to about the 3 hour mark to see the saddling paddock and post parade for Race 5 (the link should take you there), or start it about 15 minutes after to see the race footage. And for a bit of Halloween flavor, if you want to see the Headless Horseman make an appearance on his black steed, back it up a little before that!

Of note, Disdainful won the "Best Turned Out" title yesterday before the race, and the pre-race feed includes the presentation to his groom. Very nice! Not only did he run well, he looked great.

We'll have some still shots from the race to post in the coming days.

Disdainful Runs 2nd in US Debut!

We think Disdainful ran GREAT today!

John Velazquez piloted him expertly through traffic on the rail and powered him up in the stretch to take 2nd in this extremely talented field. We were super happy with his US debut in the 5th at Keeneland and based on the summary and recap from Aron, so was Eclipse.

We'll wait to see how he comes out of this race and continues to train over the next couple of weeks, but his next start could be very exciting! Stay tuned!

Here's a couple of screenshots from Keeneland today. Sorry the banners obscure part of the photo.

Disdainful at Keeneland Tomorrow

Good morning, all! We got the detailed pre-race analysis from Aron this morning, and Disdainful will be running against some absolute monsters tomorrow in the 5th at Keeneland, including a couple of proven stakes horses! Still, the mood seems to be quiet confidence, and we don't think he'd be entered in this race if there wasn't a lot of optimism about his chances, so we'll see how he performs against some extremely talented and top-bred horses.

It's also a huge plus that John Velazquez is up--a hall-of-famer and one of the top jockeys in the country. John has won the Kentucky Derby three times, the Belmont at least twice, as well as at least 15 Breeders Cup races! We couldn't have asked for a better pilot on Disdainful's US debut.

All systems are go provided it doesn't rain. If it rains, the race will come off the turf course and go onto the main dirt track, and Disdainful will be scratched. Rain is not in the forecast, however.

As for us, we're just praying for a safe race for him, wherever he finishes, but if he runs well, we'll, of course, be absolutely ecstatic!

We'll keep you posted.

It's Official! Patsy's Kim '21 Has Now Been Named.....

Lady Blitz!

So, what does it mean?

Her sire, Audible, was actually named for a football term. An "audible" is a verbal signal given by the quarterback to alter the play when he deems it necessary. (At least, that's our understanding.)

Our mission as a partnership was to suggest football-themed names in keeping with "audible." Not everyone did, which is how we ended up with the top two choices -- Lady Audible and Miss Chievious, ranked #1 and #2 by votes.

BUT....big flag on the play. Those names were rejected by the Jockey Club, so -- surrrprise! -- it went to choice #3, Lady Blitz. Which IS a football inspired name.

And we have to admit, we like it a whole lot better than Patsy's Kim '21!

Give us a bit of time and everything on this site will be moved over to the Lady Blitz name and tag for the filly formerly known as Patsy's Kim '21.

Check it out. She already has a t-shirt!

Disdainful May Be First!

We have an Early Entry notice!

Disdainful(IRE)
Oct 29th (this Saturday)
Keeneland Allowance - 1-1/16 turf
R #5
PP #3 16 in field
J. Velasquez up

It looks like a tough field but he won't be carrying high weight this time.

We're praying for safe going for his US debut.

We have a target for Magical Ways!

Looks like we have a target!

Magical Ways
Friday 11/11/2022
Aqueduct R#4
Maiden 6-1/2 f (dirt)

This guy has been kicking out some monster works of late (including the recent Wire to Wire Productions "Work of the Month") so fingers crossed he gets in. We'll let you know if anything changes or when we get an entry notice. Go Magic!

Patsy's Kim '21 is About to Get Her Permanent Name

These are the final two finalist from the partnership's naming contest. Do you have a favorite?

When we learn what her "official" name is in three days, all references to her on this site will change to her registered name.

Disdainful is "Full Speed Ahead"

We got a glowing report on our recent import, Disdainful, this morning that contained phrasing like "positive impression," "push button" and indications he's "a pretty serious talent."

Wahoo!

We've updated our Upcoming notices above to a tentative US debut date at Keeneland, but it's not a done deal because, being a new arrival, he won't have preference if the race overfills.

We'll keep you posted when we know more.

Smart Shopping '21 has Minor Injury

Our silly boy managed to scrape himself on the fence while he was out on pasture. The report is that it's mainly superficial, and although it doesn't look great, it isn't expected to impact his training.

Colts will be colts.

And you get a Bullet, and YOU get a Bullet...

Not to be outdone by Disdainful, Mo Temptation also ran a BULLET work this morning on the other side of the country at San Luis Rey Training Center. Our partnership filly "Mo" (by Mo Town) also ran a bullet last month.

Mo Temptation has an expected start date of November 18th in a 5f Maiden Special Weight at Del Mar.

Arrogate's Legacy from Thoroughbred Daily News

As you probably know, we were lucky enough to include an Arrogate yearling son in our partnership stable (Smart Shopping '21 - temporary tag). His dam is by top sire Smart Strike, who also sired Curlin, among others.

But Arrogate's legacy to the sport manifested very recently. Read the full story of his three crop impact here:

And the "Work of the Month" Goes to...

Wire to Wire Productions named Magical Ways as the "work of the month" for his 5f bullet on 10/8 at Belmont Park in 59 seconds flat. (Pictured here on the outside.) Go Magic!

Remembering Sitiby You

Sitiby You was one of our first homebreds, a daughter of Devon Lane and Netta Gayle Bell, who was a Slewvescent daughter out of a stakes-winning mare. (We have no idea what her name means. We didn't name her.)

We purchased her dam in foal to Devon Lane for a very good price at a small sale in the El Paso area (at a location that would later serve as the training track for the movie 50-to-1, the story of the Kentucky Derby winner from New Mexico, Mine That Bird). Another auction attendee told us he thought we'd made the buy of the century. We felt pretty good about that!

The following spring "Netta" produced a lovely bay filly, one of very few ever born at our ranch instead of at a breeding farm. Sadly, we weren't in a position to race a homebred at that time, and had to pare down the broodmare band that year so Netta and her foal were part of a package deal we put together for a New Mexico owner.

She later had a short career of only six starts, but was a winner and ran 2nd on another occasion.

We caught up with this girl before a race at Albuquerque Downs and upon seeing her in the saddling paddock for the first time in over three years, we were shocked! When we sold her, she was a tiny bay baby...and she'd grown into a stunning, tall grey mare. We definitely did a double take! The grey, of course, came from her sire, Devon Lane, a son of Storm Cat who was one of our state's best producing stallions in his day.

Here's a photo from that day at Albuquerque Downs.

Sitiby You was foaled in 2008, and ran from 2010 - 2012 (three to five years old). This photo is from the September - November 2012 time frame when she was four.

As a baby, she was a bit of a dynamo. She was always active and usually into some sort of mischief. Our first halter lessons with her were a complete rodeo! One morning our barn manager found her laying in the water trough, up to her neck in chilly water. He fished her out and she was fine, if a bit tired.

We will always remember our girl fondly.

Mo Temptation: Debut Plans!

Great news this morning!

Our partnership filly, Mo Temptation, has a tentative start date!

From trainer Doug O'Neill this morning: "...the plan will be likely to target a turf maiden special weight which will be contested going five furlongs on November 18th at Del Mar."

This daughter of Mo Town has snapped out some bullet and near-bullet works in the past sixty days and we're so excited to see her debut! We'll post an update when we receive her official entry.

I'm A Looker '20 Breezes

I’m a Looker ‘20 returned this week with a more serious 1/8th of a mile breeze on the outside of a stablemate. The 2-year-old did it effortlessly, finishing at the wire together with his workmate.

Trainer Doug O'Neill seems quite happy with his progress.

Disdainful Works at Fair Hill

We got a great update on our UK import Disdainful this morning. Here's a portion of the report:

Disdainful has made a smooth transition to Graham Motion's program at Fair Hill and he worked a smooth 1/2-mile outside of a mate on Saturday on the Tapeta.

Graham is quite pleased with how Disdainful has melded into his routine and will breeze him again this coming weekend.

Although they are eyeing an Allowance at Keeneland on October 29th, the races have been over-filling there, and because he's new on the scene, he'd be the "least preferred" and may have trouble getting into the race.

If not, the important thing is he's training and acclimating well, and they'll watch for a good spot for his US debut when the timing is right.

Here's a video of his work:

Info on Mo Temptation's Saturday Work

Mo Temptation stayed right on schedule with her works, breezing five furlongs from the gate in 1:02 Saturday morning at San Luis Rey.

The 2-year-old filly worked by herself, traveling willingly throughout. (We also received a video, which sadly, we can't share.) The footage picked up Mo Temptation about an 1/8th of a mile out of the gate. She received a few reminders in the turn and in the final furlong, but overall worked well.

Trainer Doug O’Neill was tending to his string in Kentucky, but will provide his personal update as soon as possible.

Magical Ways - Nice Work But Won't Run Friday

We got a report on Magical Ways this morning that had some good news and some not-so-good (but not bad) news.

Magical Ways breezed five furlongs in company yesterday with Mooney Love at Belmont. He stopped the clock in 1:01.07, and assistant trainer Leana Willaford was extremely happy with Magical Ways’ effort and is looking forward to his debut after this move.

But, unfortunately, the 1 1/8th-mile Maiden Special Weight he was aimed for on Friday, October 21st, did not fill (meaning their weren't enough entries to run it) so that option is off the table.

The Mott barn’s focus has now shifted to a 6 ½ -furlong Maiden Special Weight three weeks later, on November 11th. Trainer Bill Mott feels that with the extra time until this new target, Magical Ways will be sharp and ready to sprint. (The difference is 2.5 furlongs shorter or 3/16ths of a mile less distance.)

We'll keep you updated as Magical Way's debut approaches.

We have two partnership horses (both who may be coming up on their debut) perform work-outs this weekend.

The first was Mo Temptation (by Mo Town) who worked at San Luis Rey training center in California on 10/15/22. (Saturday is her usual work day.) Mo is trained by Doug O'Neill.

Magical Ways - Possible Debut Oct 21st!

Magical Ways may possibly be making his racing debut on October 21st. It's not a done deal at this writing, but we're hoping.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of race he will run, considering his sire's historic debut which earned him the fastest debut speed figure in history -- a sizzling 114! Maclean's Music has also gone on to sire some great racehorses, including Jackie's Warrior.

Considering Magical Ways ("Magic") recently ran a blistering bullet work, he might just have it in him, too.

Stay healthy and sound, Magic. We want to see you run your race!

More on the Sire of Magical Ways

Unless you spend a lot of times following racing or studying pedigrees, you may not have heard of Magical Way's sire, Maclean's Music. But there are people in the industry who are excited about this young stallion.

Maclean's Music was sired by top sire Distorted Humor, and only raced once -- but he won that race easily by a devastating margin and earned a 114 speed figure. It was the fastest debut in history!

Sadly, surgery to remove of a split bone later caused complications and he was retired to stud. He stood his first year at $6,500. His stud fee now is set at $50,000.

Maclean's Music really came to light as a sire after the rise of this year's superstar, Jackie's Warrior. But he's far from a one hit wonder, siring such horses as Cloud Computing (Preakness Winner) and Complexity (G1/G2 stakes winner).

Read his story here: Maclean's Music Retired to Hill N Dale  10-16-2012 including commentary by his jockey, Mike Smith, the New Mexico native who's ridden some of racing's legendary horses.

Naming "Patsy's Kim '21"

The contest has "kicked off" among the owners for a football-inspired name for Patsy's Kim '21, daughter of Audible. (Which is a football term -- who knew?) Our name suggestion -- Rose Bowl -- was not one of the final names chosen for the contest.

This naming competition is being handled like playoffs with a bracket style play-off.

Here are the "Sweet Sixteen" choices, of which we were asked to vote for our top eight names:

Comeback Kim

Soundslikemischief

Patsy's Kicker

Call the Blitz

Girl in Motion

Lady Blitz

She's in Motion

Blitz Baby

Tactical Call

Miss Chevious

Patsy's Manning

She Beat the Blitz

Run Pass Patsy

Lady Audible

Patsy's Mischief

First Down Kim

The next vote will be narrowed down to the eight most popular names. We'll keep you posted.

I'm A Looker '20 Exercises at Santa Anita

I’m a Looker ’20 had an open gallop yesterday morning at Santa Anita. The 2YO handled it well and extended nicely in the stretch.

If all continues forward well, this son of Pioneerof the Nile will gradually have the intensity of his works increased each week.

I'm A Looker '20 to Breeze Today 10/12/2022

Exciting news from the Richard Mandella barn in Santa Anita:

"We are pleased to report I’m a Looker ’20 continues to move right along in the Mandella barn. On Wednesday, he is expected to have his first minor breeze or open gallop as Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella calls it.

The 2-year-old colt will be allowed to breeze an eighth of a mile down the stretch and provided he handles it professionally as he has done with everything else, he will move right on to a quarter-mile breeze next."

Here's hoping all goes well for this son of Pioneerof the Nile!

We'll let you know the outcome in a future post.

Introducing Magical Ways

Yes, we have a new addition to our partnership stable. And he's a 3YO colt!

We were so excited (and fortunate) to just slip under the wire on this partnership, because the offer closed immediately after we bought in -- and we believe we were the very last partner to sign up.

Since he's on course to debut in the near future (possible in October!) we're glad to be on board.

Our Name for Patsy's Kim '21

Okay, so they threw us a curve and said the wanted a football-related name for Patsy's Kim '21 just before they opened it to submissions today.

Why football, you ask?

Apparently, an "Audible" is a football term for a play code that's shouted (so heard 'audibly') to the other players. Audible is her sire.

Do you know how hard it is coming up with a football-themed name for a filly  (that doesn't involve stereotypes like cheerleaders)?  LOL

We went through a lot of ideas, but none of them sounded feminine and adding Ms. or Miss to the beginning did nothing to improve them.

So what did we submit?

Rose Bowl

Can't believe that wasn't taken already, but it is available.

They are going to run the contest like a sweet sixteen, using brackets to identify the most popular names so we'll see what happens. I'm sure other partners will come up with some really great names.

As long as they select a catchy name that fits this lovely filly, we'll be happy! I'll keep you posted on the updates as the naming contest continues.

Surprise Photo of Smart Shopping '21

One of our partners discovered he'd unwittingly snapped a photo of our boy while he was attending the Saratoga Sale.

Yup, that's his hip number 79 and his sire and dam are listed on the stall plate to the left.

Very handsome yearling with an eye-catching pedigree. Of course he's grown a lot since this photo was taken and is now working under saddle.

On Saturday, his half-sister by American Pharoah (Shoppingforpharoah) ran a very nice work. She is already a race winner and stakes placed in five starts. And, of course, Arrogates are winning races and stakes all over the country.

We count ourselves very lucky to be involved in his partnership.

Permission was granted to use this photo
by our fellow partner, the photographer.

About Mo Temptation's Saturday Work

We got a bit more information from trainer Doug O'Neill on Mo Temptations' work on Saturday.

Update:

"Mo Temptation was back on the worktab yesterday morning breezing five furlongs in 1:02.20 at San Luis Rey Downs. The 2-year-old daughter of Mo Town caught some company from another worker from the Dan Dunham stable. It was not the barn's intent to breeze Mo Temptation in company, considering she missed last week’s breeze, but it ended up playing out well."

Sounds like more good news. We're looking forward to the full report.

A Name for Patsy's Kim '21

We've been informed the naming process for Patsy's Kim '21 (temporary tag) will begin this coming week for members of the partnership.

We're playing around with some ideas that follow the "sound" theme, because her sire is Audible. We've come up with several ideas including:

Hear Me Now

Heard Every Word

Never A Whisper

Story Well Told

Signal Code

DidYouCatchThat

Sounds Good

Stereophonic

Say Again

But the three names that are currently at the top of  our list are a few we think would sound great being called in the home stretch:

Clearly Stated

Sheza Statement

No Static

The inspiration for the last choice was, of course, the theme song from the movie FM ("No Static At All" is already in use):

(We'd also considered FM as a name idea, but didn't think it would fly.)

Where's I'm A Looker '20?

I'm A Looker '20 (temporary tag) continues his training at Santa Anita under Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, after having shipped in last month from Silver Springs.

We hope to post updates and workout notices soon.

Mo Temptation Works

A nice 5 furlong workout at San Luis Rey Training Center this morning for our girl, Mo Temptation. Glad to see her back to business after her ankle cut last week. She's never down for long.

Although this wasn't a bullet or near bullet, this is her second work at 5 furlongs (5/8ths of a mile) and we're pleased with her time. Barring any more setbacks, she can begin to move forward in future workouts. She is probably within 30-40 days of her first start, again barring anything unforeseen.

The Story of Flightline

As we approach the Breeders Cup, and the excitement is building about the undefeated Flightline and this years' Breeders Cup Classic, we wanted to share this video with you about the his story.

Flightline has already been compared to the great Secretariat. If he holds true to his past performances--which have been absolutely astonishing--he may very well achieve that status. But he still has a lot to prove and the Breeders Cup Classic is going to be a crucial key to building his legend.

I want to emphasize that Flightline is, like our stable, a partnership horse. In this case, a number of partners joined forces to buy and fund this spectacularly promising young colt. West Point Thoroughbreds is just one of the several partnerships involved. Neither Eclipse nor MyRacehorse is involved in the partnership, but it's a great example of what partnerships can achieve.

We hoped you enjoyed the video and you'll watch for Flightline in the Breeders Cup Classic at the beginning of November.

Where's Coexist?

Coexist made her first start in a turf race at Saratoga in upstate New York on August 14th, but unfortunately was bumped hard soon after leaving the gate which is where we believe she sustained a hind suspensory injury. Probably due to the injury she did not perform well, and finished 9th in a field of 10.

She is now on rest until she can heal and begin training back to racing fitness. We don't expect her to start again until December 2022, at the earliest.

Meanwhile, some of the other 2YO fillies she started with have gone on to be stakes caliber performers, including Towhead, who is now stakes placed with a 2nd in the Aristocrat Gaming Juvenile Fillies Stake at Kentucky Downs.

We'll keep you updated when we get the next report on her progress.

Coexist in post parade with Javier Castellano up.

Coexist in per race warm-up on the Saratoga track.

Video Tour of Wavertree Facilities

This is the facility where Patsy's Kim '21 and Smart Shopping '21 are currently stabled.

The video was from 2010, so I'm sure there are probably extensive changes to the facility since it was filmed, but it will give you an overview of this exceptional training facility.

Patsy's Kim '21 Moving Along Nicely in her Training

We received a very informative video today from Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree Farms on our filly's progress. Unfortunately, we can't share the video because it's exclusively for the partnership and not available on public formats (YouTube, etc.), but it was a great education in the preparation steps for the young horses. (I did locate a video tour of Wavertree Farm itself which I'll share in a separate post later today.)

Mr. Dunne first demonstrated some stall work with a groom and Patsy's Kim '21, showing the steps in teaching the horse to bend their necks toward the handler, and in following cues and commands. He then introduced a "roller," which takes the place of a saddle in these early stages and teaches the filly what it feels like to have the girth cinched up and to move with the roller in place. The roller is basically a wide piece of leather that goes over the back with a buckle for cynching. Mr. Dunne explained that in early training, it's much less cumbersome than working with a complete saddle.

The video then moved on to the next training phase, which is round pen work under saddle. Patsy's Kim '21 worked with four other yearlings (all fillies, we are assuming) as they walked, trotted and cantered/hand galloped both directions around the round pen with a rider on their backs. We were especially pleased with our filly's very well behaved demeanor and her attention to what was going on around and in front of her.

The conclusion of the video was a brief chat with Ciaran Dunne in his office, where he addressed Patsy's Kim '21's progress. In that discussion, he said:

"The Audible filly out of Patsy's Kim has been very straightforward. She's moved through the first few phases of what we do, and as you can see, is currently galloping in the round pen. Beautiful moving filly under tack and she's very strong and  mature for her age, and she's happy wherever you put her. Usually she's a leader, but today she was in behind. She's a filly who carries herself with a lot of confidence and she's moving forward well."

Disdainful Has Arrived!

We're very excited to report Disdainful is now at Fair Hill Training Center in the USA! Here's part of the update we received from Aron Wellman of Eclipse this morning:

"Disdainful handled his long journey across the pond like a Champ and he cleared quarantine and is now comfortable with Graham Motion at Fair Hill.

It was a lot to ask of Disdainful to run at Yarmouth the Sunday before last and then begin his trek to the States just a few days later, but he seems to have taken it all in stride.

Now, we'll let him catch his breath and settle in as we introduce him to the American way and Graham's program in coming weeks.

We'll report as he gets into a groove, but so far so good! Believe Big!"

Mo Temptation Update

Mo Temptation managed to scratch her ankle this past week which caused some inflammation, leading the O’Neill team to bypass this past weekend's work.

She was treated with antibiotics and now looks great according to assistant trainer Kim Marrs. She finished her round of antibiotics and is expected to return to the work tab this coming Saturday. Kim reported Mo Temptation has had "some minor bumps along the way” but she may be getting closer to her first start.

We'll report back after Mo Temptation breezes.

Training Update: Our Two Yearlings in Florida

In the past week, Hurricane Ian gave us a few moments of anxiety, but Ocala was spared, which was great news considering both of our yearlings are currently housed at Wavertree.

Apparently, the hurricane only resulted in about a day off for the farm due to some wind and rain, but normal operations were restored the next day. Here's the latest updates on our two babies.

Smart Shopping '21 (temporary name)

The Arrogate colt is currently being ridden in a light jog under saddle and being taught basics like turning, bending and moving around the stable complex with a rider on his back. A brief video was included showing Smart Shopping '21 traversing a shedrow and doing a complete circle around a staff member. He is reportedly doing very well in his training.

Patsy's Kim '21 (temporary name)

Our Audible filly is also training well and beginning her saddle work. Although her video was quite brief and showed no saddle work, the staff said she is doing very well in her training and learning quickly.

Coming to America!

Disdainful is "Coming to America." Can't wait to see what's ahead for this very promising Irish bred 2YO. Enjoy our celebratory video above (courtesy of Neil Diamond).
