Magical Ways Potential Race Did Not Fill

Magical Ways potential 6.5f next start did not fill. It may be brought back for Saturday's card, so Magical Ways will be entered on Wednesday if it's written. We'll keep you posted.

Magical Ways Update

Magical Ways had his final breeze on Friday morning over the Belmont training track in preparation for a maiden special weight next week at Aqueduct.

The 4-year-old colt covered four furlongs in 50.90 (43/66) by himself. The Mott team (who just had a huge win with Art Collector in the Pegasus World Cup) remains pleased with his overall condition and as a result entered him this morning in a six and one-half maiden special weight next Friday at Aqueduct.

The card appears to be light on entries and may not fill for Friday but we'll follow up with an update once we know.

Lady Blitz Now Exercising a Mile

Lady Blitz was out for her one-mile gallop this morning at Wavertree Farm in Ocala. We've been thrilled with her progress so far, and trainer Ciaran Dunne seems very pleased with this exceptional filly from Audible's first crop.

In the coming weeks, she'll begin performing short little breezes (also known as "speed work") as more advanced exercise routines start being incorporated into her training.

You can read more about Lady Blitz's pedigree and other information on her page: Lady Blitz

Mo Temptation Recovery Update

We got a good report on Mo Temptation, who is currently on 90-day rest in Southern California and on approach to being re-evaluated prior to hopefully returning to training for her 3YO year. The report included a YouTube video of our Mo Town partnership filly, which we've included below.

Mo Temptation continues to do well during her R&R at Kingfisher Farm. She is on her final 30 days of her planned 90-day break. She remains on the same program from our last update, using the Eurociser daily along with turnout time in the afternoon.

She will be re-evaluated towards the end of February and future plans will be determined from there.

Smart Shopping '21 Naming Process Continues

These names made the first cut. It appears Seize the Grey and Fifth Avenue are the favorites so far.

Pioneer Prince After Debut Report

While the official chart never looks pretty when a horse finishes 10th, Pioneer Prince may not have to progress as far as one would think based on the numbers and his effort.

At the end, Pioneer Prince finished about 8 lengths from the race winner, Hawker, but only about 4-5 lengths out of the money as most of the 3rd-10th place finishers were rather bunched up at the finish. As discussed prior, Saturday's race is just the starting point in Pioneer Prince’s career and a horse who still looks to be figuring out his job on the racetrack. With his pedigree and physique, a bit more route of ground should also do a world of good.

After the race jockey Mike Smith told us that Pioneer Prince is a horse that should have a lot of room for upside. Smith added “he gave me a nice little run, got a little tired at the end but he wanted every part of the gallop out after he got his second wind.”

Pioneer Prince exited his debut in good order. He received a 55 Beyer Speed Figure and an 82 Equibase figure.

We stopped in to check on our son of Pioneerof the Nile and caught him hand walking which is a typical routine for a horse the day after a race. Trainer Richard Mandella will continue to give him a few easy days out of the race and let the horse tell him when he’s ready to return to the track.

We’ll check back in with the Mandella barn in the coming days and report back on how Pioneer Prince came out of the race.

Magical Ways After Workout Report

We're a little late posting this, but here is the after-workout report on Magical Ways last week.

Magical Ways had his first breeze back this morning over the Belmont training track, covering four furlongs in 52.01 (35/39). The 4-year-colt has continued in good physical order since his third-place finish on Jan. 8.

We have two potential race options looking ahead, a one-mile maiden special weight on Feb. 2 or a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight on Feb. 3

As some of you may be aware, the 1 1/8th-mile race we were considering, prior to entering in the seven-furlong race we ran in, was never used and it may be a case of running in whatever of the two races that fills.

Regardless, Magical Ways should return to the worktab next Thursday or Friday, setting him up for one of the race options the following week.

Pioneer Prince Finishes 10th in Debut

No, we're not worried!

The trainer, Richard Mandella, expressed to the partnership before the race that Pioneer Prince needed more experience and probably a bit more distance before he'll perform at peak.

In photos we saw posted by the partnership, Pioneer Prince is a gorgeous horse, very calm and well-behaved in the paddock. This race probably gave him a good foundation for later races, as well as bringing him to a sharper state of fitness.

Jockey Mike Smith commented that Pioneer Prince wanted every part of the gallop out, and did so strongly. That's a very good sign.

We'll post the after race summary when we receive it, and continue to post his progress in the weeks to come.

Mike Smith Up for Pioneer Prince's Debut!

We're so excited! New Mexico's own Mike Smith will pilot Pioneer Prince for his debut!

One Last Night '21 is Training Extremely Well!

Our Wootten Bassett filly with the temporary tag of One Last Night '21 is apparently doing great in training. A recent report from MRH stated:

"She continues to do well in her training at trainer Kenny McPeek’s farm and has even begun gate schooling and has been gliding through the process like a champ.

This filly arrived from a big sale in France with a lot of expectation and hope, and if all goes well, she may be running in some very big races here in America next summer.  [Fingers crossed for her hopefully very bright future.]

If you're not familiar with her breeding or why she is such a standout, you might want to read HER PAGE on this site.

For info on her progress so far, see her UPDATES.

She's certainly a stunner.

Pioneer Prince Runs Bullet 3 Days Ahead of Debut

Our Pioneerof the Nile 3YO worked today at Santa Anita, finishing with the top time of seven horses working that distance. He has been working 6f, and this was a cut back to only 3f ahead of his debut on turf this Saturday.

Fingers crossed for a safe and productive first race.

We'll be posting more on his start later.

Magical Ways After Race Update

We received an after-race report on Magical Ways today. There's some good news and some not-so-great news.

Good News First

Magical Ways bounced out of Sunday’s race in good order! Yay! It's encouraging when they race and have no setbacks. This was great news! But that said...

Now the Not So Great News

The 4-year-old son of Maclean’s Music earned a 66 Beyer Speed Figure which was a regression from the start prior but as we mentioned that 76 Beyer Speed Figure two-back returned on the elevated side.

We wanted to note that this is different from the Equibase speed figures which showed he had earned another six point increase, just as he did between his first and second races (70 to 76 to 82), so each successive race has shown improvement. The contrasting numbers boil down to which source you have more confidence in and whose opinion you trust most. Personally, we've always gone by the Equibase figures which are a brighter picture.

He's also left the connections scratching their heads a bit. Trainer Bill Mott is still trying to figure out what this colt wants to do. Leading into this most recent race he felt that longer was the better for him but after this race Bill felt that may not be the case. To be fair to the horse, he didn't have a chance to run a longer race, since the 1-1/16 race was foregone for the earlier 6.5 furlong race, though the reasoning behind the switch seemed very sound. (Some races aren't filling at Aqueduct, so it was a bird-in-the-hand scenario with the earlier - but shorter - race that was carded for Sunday.)

We, personally, would like to see Magic get a shot at both a longer race and a dry track, because all three of his races to date have been on a wet or muddy but sealed surface. The trainer tried blinkers in the last race, which didn't really seem to have a great amount of impact. So basically, we're all a little stumped.

The Mott team will continue to monitor him over the coming weeks and once the new condition book is released for the Big A, possible options will be discussed.

Due to a couple of lay-ups for Magical Ways, he got a very late start to his career, with his first race at the tail end of his 3YO season. He has a lot of ground to make up and, unfortunately, if his "code" can't be broken on improving his performance, he may have to drop in class.

Fingers crossed they find the magical formula for Magical Ways.

Article on Charge It - Close relative to Secret Crush

Secret Crush's family has definitely made some waves...and is still making them.

This is a Thoroughbred Daily News article on Charge It who will run as a 4YO this year. Their dams are half-sisters.

Changes for this Site

After today, we're going to reduce the number of updates that we're posting. With eleven partnership horses now of racing age, things are going to start getting very busy especially as it gets later in the year!

We'll continue to post work outs, starts, "firsts," and any major progress updates on each horse, plus videos and photos when we have them to share, but otherwise we'll scale back on the "all the news/all the time" frequency of our posts.

We will still use this site in conjunction with our Facebook page - Rising Star Thoroughbreds - New Mexico. If you'd like to join our merry band of followers there, just click the highlighted name for a link.

Thanks for your interest in our partnership stable. We've had some bumps along the way -- and one tragedy in the non-training related death of the very promising Disdainful(IRE) -- but we hope there will be a lot of fun and celebration ahead.

Thanks for reading our blog.

It all started with Zinger - our homebred.
Seven wins and now happily retired with us.

Song of the Lark '21 Trains in Texas

We've already posted about those 2YOs "reporting back for duty" at Wavertree in Ocala, but we also have a Texas youngster. Song of the Lark '21 is at the Asmussen training facility in Laredo, TX run by Keith Asmussen, father of top trainer Steve Asmussen, who will be the future trainer of this nice Uncle Mo colt.

Song of the Lark '21 is currently engaged in his saddle training at the farm, and it sounds as if he may be slightly behind the other group at Wavertree in his progress, but there's plenty of time until he's expected to make his first start later this year.

The Song of the Lark '21's update came with a photo of the handsome colt courtesy of the farm.

Being by top sire Uncle Mo and out of a very talented Seeking the Gold daughter, Song of the Lark (who has produced FIVE winners from seven starters including Canadian Horse of the Year Up With the Birds and Speightsong, who logged nine wins) we have high hopes for this boy!

Lady Blitz is Back from Vacation

As with our other 2YOs at Wavertree, Lady Blitz has now wrapped up her leisure time and is back on the clock as her training progresses. She also enjoyed swimming and daily paddock cruises as she took some well-earned time off.

In February, our daughter of Audible will begin her "speed work" if all goes according to plan, where she'll begin breezing at short distances and gradually increase her work distance over time.

We've been very pleased with Lady Blitz's training and progress, as she seems to be a level-headed sort who takes to training well and does almost everything right (change of leads, attentive, responds to cues, etc.)

We should have a video of our girl working to post soon.

The Elite Eleven

With the deeply felt demise of Disdainful(IRE) last week, our stable of athletes who were affectionately called "The Terrific Twelve" needed a new name for their collective.

After some thought, we decided to call our partnership group "The Elite Eleven" because we truly believe they represent some of the best and most promising Thoroughbred bloodlines in the industry, and many are showing great aptitude for their careers.

We're praying they all stay safe, sound and healthy as they move forward with this new chapter of their lives in 2023.

May the Force be with them all. Vaya Con Dios, Caballos.

Enchante '21 Returns to Training

Like our other 2YOs at Wavertree, Enchante ‘21 also enjoyed her scheduled mini break of a few weeks off from training and also returned to work today at Wavertree. As with her stablemates, she kept fit by swimming in the farm’s pool and taking strolls in her paddock.

As she returns to training, the 2-year-old will begin with field work and then proceed to the training track for her daily exercise. Next month, she should be ready for her first “speed work”, when the daughter of Nyquist will breeze for a sixteenth of a mile and then gradually increase the distance going forward.

Trainer Ciaran Dunn remarked that Enchante ’21 continues to develop to his liking. Although it’s early days, he said the filly looks like she'll have a fair amount of speed to her, and thinks she may be best suited to the dirt

We’re expecting to have video of Enchante ‘21 training in the coming days and will share in our next update.

Sarrocchi '21 Back To Work

Like the other newly-turned-2YOs, Sarrocchi ‘21 enjoyed his scheduled mini break of a few weeks off from training and returned to work today at Wavertree. Farm Trainer Ciaran Dunne also kept this colt fit by swimming in the farm’s pool and taking strolls in his paddock during his holiday time off.

As he returns to training, the 2-year-old colt will begin with field work and then proceed to the training track for his daily exercise. In February, he should be ready for his first piece of what we refer to as “speed work”, when the son of Justify will breeze for a sixteenth of a mile and then gradually increase the distance going forward.

Of special note, Ciaran reported that Sarrocchi ’21 is a terrific mover, and said he looks like he could have a future on the grass based on his longer stride which turf horses often have.

We expect to have video of Sarrocchi ‘21 training in the coming days and will share in our next update.

Smart Shopping '21 Update

Smart Shopping ‘21 enjoyed his scheduled mini break of a few weeks off from training and returned to work today at Wavertree. Like Secret Crush and others, the son of Arrogate’s kept his fitness level up by swimming in the farm’s pool and taking strolls in his paddock.

As he returns to training, the 2-year-old will begin with field work and then proceed to the training track for his daily exercise.

Ciaran remarked to our team that he would like to see Smart Shopping ’21 get stronger physically. Depending upon how the next month goes in his training, he might be ready for his first piece of what we refer to as “speed work” — a sixteenth of a mile breeze. But Ciaran will allow the colt to let him know when he is ready to take that next step.

We’re expecting to have video of Smart Shopping ‘21 training in the coming days and will share in our next update.

Secret Crush After Break Update

Secret Crush Update

We’re pleased to report that Secret Crush enjoyed his scheduled mini break of a few weeks off from training and returned under saddle today at Wavertree. During his respite, he kept fit by swimming in the farm’s pool and taking strolls in his paddock.

As he returns to training, the 2-year-old colt will begin with field work and then proceed to the training track for his daily exercise. In February, he should be ready for his first piece of what we refer to as “speed work” where he will breeze for a sixteenth of a mile and then gradually increase the distance going forward.

Farm trainer Ciaran Dunne reported that Secret Crush is a “super smart horse” who has taken his lessons well. The colt is tall and leggy and needs to do some growing into his frame, but Ciaran said he “looks every bit of a two-turn horse.” We’re expecting to have video of Secret Crush training in the coming days and will share in our next update.

Pioneer Prince - Change in Plan!

After Pioneer Prince's last work with top jocket Flavien Prat in the irons, Flavien recommended that Pioneer Prince's running style might be better suited to turf.

Plans for his debut were quickly revised, and Pioneer Prince will now target a 6-1/2 f. turf race on January 21st as his debut race. The Upcoming information above has been updated.

Here's the record of Pioneer Prince's workouts to date, which have include four bullet works:

Magical Ways Runs 3rd

Magical Ways ran 3rd today in his race at Aqueduct. He broke a little less sharp than before this time, went up to challenge the leaders before the turn and was running a solid 2nd going into the turn.

Sadly, he was caught by another horse well into the turn and ended up running 3rd. On the bright side, he did fend off a rival in the stretch and earned an 82 speed figure on Equibase, his third consecutive speed figure increase.

We'll share more insights from the race recap once we receive it along with any speculation on where, when, how far and on what surface he may run next.

In the photo below, Magical Ways is #1 with the red saddle cloth, just starting the turn in second place.

Disdainful(IRE) - Final Update

We are very heartbroken to report that Disdainful contracted Peritonitis which is an infection of the abdominal cavity, an affliction that is often fatal. In spite of the best efforts of the equine hospital staff to save him, he didn't respond to treatment as hoped and was humanely euthanized on January 6, 2023.

Disdainful was an extremely promising talent with an excellent attitude, and we believe he was destined for greatness, but it wasn't meant to be. His loss was unrelated to training or racing.

Rest in Peace, Disdainful.

Coexist Update

Coexist (by Creative Cause) is still in Kentucky with trainer "Scooter" Hughes, and was 'just starting to get her legs back' when a round of frigid weather hit Kentucky. Her training had to be suspended for the time being, but she should be back at it once the winter blast passes.

Coexist turned 3 on New Year Day.

Song of the Lark '21's Full Sister Debuts January 8th

Sassiness(ON), the full sibling of our 2YO partnership horse, Song of the Lark '21 (temporary tag) will be debuting at Gulfstream Park next Thursday, January 8, 2023. Both are sired by top sire Uncle Mo, out of Song of the Lark by Seeking the Gold.

She will be post position #1 of a Maiden Special Weight going 7.5 furlongs on the turf. Sassiness will be in a field of 11 fillies, some by top sires Into Mischief, Gun Runner, More Than Ready and Bernardini. The race is schedule for 2:10 PM Eastern, which will be 12:10 PM Mountain time.

Sassiness is trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr. -- a trainer/jockey team who have proven to be a pretty formidable.

We'll be eagerly awaiting her debut!

Song of the Lark '21 (temporary tag)

Pioneer Prince Approaches Potential Debut

Our upcoming list has been updated with the new anticipated date for Pioneer Prince's debut at Santa Anita. It's now moved up two days!

In fact, we may have a one-two punch on the 14th and 15th (if all goes well) of Pioneer Prince's debut at Santa Anita and Magical Ways' third start at Aqueduct. Fingers crossed that plans unfurl and that, if so, they both have a safe and productive race.

Meanwhile, here's a capture of Pioneer Prince's workouts to date. The buzz is building over this very promising colt with an outstanding pedigree.

Lady Blitz is a Looker!

When our partners visited Lady Blitz last month at Wavertree Farm in Ocala, they were thrilled to see how nicely Lady Blitz (formerly known as Patsy's Kim '21) is maturing. The filly had grown taller, was putting on muscle and was simply stunning. She's quite a head-turner.

Lady Blitz at the Partnership Preview at Ocala in December.
Photo taken by a partner.

The dark bay filly with a white star has taken to her training extremely well, and "does everything right" according to her handlers. We've very excited about her future, as a daughter from the first crop sired by Audible, who is himself a son of the great Into Mischief. She was the highest selling filly by Audible in North America last year, and so far she is living up to it!

Lady Blitz is now a 2YO and will be returning to training in the days ahead after her respite for the holidays. She could be breezing as soon as next month, if all goes according to plan.

We're really looking forward to see what the summer of 2023 brings for her.

Disdainful Update

Disdainful(IRE), who is currently on lay-up for a bruised pelvis from casting in his stall, had a bout with colic over Christmas weekend that required surgery. He seems to be doing fine now and will continue to be monitored.

Thankfully, this setback is not expected to lengthen his lay-up time, and he should be back in training this spring for his 3YO year.

Update: Disdainful has taken a turn for the worse with the development of Peritonitis. We'll update you further when we hear more on his condition and the outcome.

Get well soon, Disdainful!

Mo Temptation Update

Mo Temptation is doing well at Kingfisher Farms as she is now at the 30-day mark since being turned out after showing some heat in a third carpal bone. The plan remains to keep her at Kingfisher for a full 90-days (approximately late February).

Currently, the 2-year-old filly’s daily routine consists of a morning session on the Eurociser to keep her body moving, followed by spending the afternoon in her private small grass paddock.

During the night, she returns to a stall and will repeat this routine daily.

As time progresses, she will move into a larger grass paddock giving her the freedom to extend herself more freely, but at this time a smaller paddock is deemed necessary for proper healing.

Magical Ways Worked Out on 12/30/2022

The numbers don't always give the whole picture, as in the case of Pioneer Prince's recent work with so-so numbers, but a fantastic work once we could view it on video.

Hopefully that's the case here, or it was just a maintenance work as Magical Ways starts his tune-up for his anticipated third race on January 15th at Aqueduct.

Here's the report:

He is expected to make his debut sometime in mid-January.

Although this seems like more of a mediocre work compared to some of his other times, the video actually reveals it was a very good work in company with two other horses. Pioneer Prince hit the wire first and showed good incentive and drive to the wire with a nice gallop out. We were extremely happy with what we saw.

Magical Ways Workout Update

Magical Ways had his first work back the morning of December 30th following his fifth place finish on December 15th, breezing four furlongs in 51.95 (115/133) over the Belmont Park training track.

This was a solo maintenance work for the son of Maclean’s Music who has remained in good order since his second career start.

Next week, he’ll have a more serious work in preparation for a possible third start on January 15th in the a maiden special weight going nine furlongs (one mile and one-eighth).

Happy New Year and Happy Birthday to...

It's a brand new year, and that means all Thoroughbreds officially turn one year older.

Here's a roster of all of our runners and runners-to-be, all of which are now at least two years old.

This includes a few new ones you'll be introduced to shortly.

Our "Magnificent Seven" has now become the "Terrific Twelve!"

It's going to be an exciting 2023!
